And in that respect I agree.

Many years ago when I was at uni, we did a study on mormonism, and interestingly enough mormon missionaries are more likely to target someone who openly profess their Christianity, because they can profess their same belief in Jesus and the God the bible.

I think that its not as easy as saying a mormon is not a christian. Someone who is a mormon may not have been exposed to any of the different teachings such as man being able to achieve godhood

I'd find it hard to believe that they wouldn't know that particular doctrine since it is a well known doctrine even among those who never were Mormons, but I'm willing to concede there might be exceptions.

I'm also familiar with the fact they find professing Christians as easy targets for their religion, and that's why we are warned against remaining children in the faith so we will not be swayed by these other doctrines. If the church were fulfilling its commission to make disciples, then this wouldn't happen to the extent that it does.

I'm new to this forum, so I hope my response fits the conversation. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), and I hold firmly to the principles and doctrines of the faith. It seems from the discussion that the biggest question is whether Mormons have truly come to accept Jesus Christ. Obviously I can't speak for all members, but most active members of the church that I have met feel very similar to me about the Savior.

I love and revere Jesus Christ with all my heart. He is my personal Savior. Without Him I am nothing. His grace and mercy has changed me--and not just once, but over and over again throughout my life. He is my everything. He has taken my sins, and made me so much more than I could possibly ever be alone. I can't say enough of Him, and I praise Him without the least reservation. I place all my faith and trust Him.

And in response to the original question of whether Mormons will go to heaven or not, I respond simply that I have full faith in my Savior. I know what He has done and is doing for me, and I will follow Him where He leads me, and He has lead me lovingly to where I am now. My relationship to Him has come from personal experience with Him. I know He lives, and I know He loves me.

How to you reconcile the differences in mormon doctrine and the seeming contradiction with mainstream christianity?

A big one would be the idea that men can become gods of their own planet?

I'm not out to trap or take the mickey, just curious

.

Look at scientology, its well known some of the kookier doctrines such as we all descended from clams, yet it still sucks people in. Ardent scientologists will deny the doctrines that we all know exist thanks to ex scientologists

Cults reveal their truth in stages. I recall having a fierce doctrinal debate with a friend who was getting involved with a mormon church, as far as she was concerned it was another christian church, she refused to believe what any of us were saying about the dodgy doctrines

You're right that our ideas of our eternal potential set us apart from mainstream Christianity, and it's one of the chief reasons many will not consider us Christians.

I'll do my best to explain it as plainly and clearly as possible.

We believe that all human beings lived in the presence of God as spirits before we were born, and that we are literally children of God. Our relationship to Him is more than just pot to potter, but child to father. As such, we had the potential, over several stages of existence, to grow and progress to become like Him. Part of that process involved leaving His presence to learn to live by faith. God knew we would come up short. He knew we couldn't qualify without help.

Jesus Christ, as God's firstborn Son, and our older brother, willingly took on the role of our Savior and Redeemer. He was chosen from the beginning as the one who would save all mankind from sin and death. At God's side, Jesus Christ creates and rules the universe.

Through the Savior, Jesus Christ, we can overcome sin and return to God's presence to continue our progression. Like any good Father, God wants us to have the potential to become like Him, and enjoy the kind of life He now has.

I understand this is an uncommon belief, and that there aren't many Christians today outside of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that believe it.

Thanks for the response. I'm familiar with the concept. I've heard it is taught this is why those born with mental retardation or who die as children, were the souls of those who fought the most bravely in the great wars prior to the age of man on earth. So, they end up with a sort of a "pass".

Jesus Christ, as God's firstborn Son, and our older brother, willingly took on the role of our Savior and Redeemer. He was chosen from the beginning as the one who would save all mankind from sin and death. At God's side, Jesus Christ creates and rules the universe.

Chosen from among a selection of two, Jesus and Lucifer. Both of whom desired to become our redeemer.

Through the Savior, Jesus Christ, we can overcome sin and return to God's presence to continue our progression. Like any good Father, God wants us to have the potential to become like Him, and enjoy the kind of life He now has.

This is the same temptation that caused Eve to fall, "you will be like God".
