Ah, good ol' Space Marines. 40K's trademark, and understandably so. I too really enjoy the Black Templars, though they have the potential to be really problematic with their hatred for psykers. Love the Space Wolves, but Dark Angels are among my least favorite, solely for their secrecy and tendency to dip out on a fight when one of the Fallen are near.
Have you looked into the Blood Angels chapter? Heck, have you read any of the novels at all? Great stuff and a nominal way to get into the setting, if you've not perused some already.
I don't have money for miniatures either, mang. Though, if I did, I would then have the problem of deciding whether I wanted to play Word Bearers, Blood Angels, Orks, or the Vostroyan Firstborn. >.>
Wow. Seems you've done more reading than I, then! XD I mostly stick to Ciaphas Cain, by Sandy Mitchell, but I've also really enjoyed Dan Abnett's Ravenor trilogy and Gav Thorpe's Raven's Flight short story. Once I'm out of grad school I plan to read a lot more of it.
By chance, have you done like me and supplemented your lack of tabletop with the vidja games?
PS: I'd check up on the Ultramarines omnibus first, I THINK that's the one written by an author who really wrecked 'em, according to an old friend of mine. Kind of a not-so-subtle racist too, as he calls the Salamanders' black skin a "genetic defect." I forget the name and what exactly he wrote, though. >_< I can check up on it if you like.
The Dark Angels have a sordid past, as you'll see from reading further. And they use a lot of biblical/hebrew names, especially angelic ones. EG, their chapter master is named Azrael. The name commonly attributed to the angel of death, if I recall. So he's probably named after a fallen angel, and by no mistake either.
Also, Matt Ward was apparently the bad Ultramarines author, according to my friend who reads more 40K than I. By wrecked 'em, I mean he supposedly made them come off as entirely TOO arrogant, hard to relate to, etc, while Graham McNeil's ultramarines are much more likeable and knightly.
Kelly, keep 'em for retirement! Be that cool granddad who kicks around the snot-nosed kids who think the tyranids are cool! XD
Let's see,
I have;
Imperial Guard (my own regiment)
Minotaur Space Marines
Grey Knights
Iron Warriors Chaos Marines
I was building a 30k Word Bearer army, but with the price hikes that got scraped.
Enjoy the books, Brothers of the Snakes is good. Gaunts Ghosts is a good series. I usually go for the Imperial Guard books the most.
Oh yeah, and I was an outrider for GW.
Outriders job is to go out into independent retail shops, demonstrate the games, teach new players how to play and how to paint, and promote the game. Outriders are volunteers who are paid in miniatures. They use to be everywhere but as GW got bigger, they were phased out. Until two months ago, Japan was the last to have one. For now at least, they had to discontinue the outriders.
