We do talent shows at my synagogue. No prizes, just that people get up and perform. Since we don't do "special music," this is one way to enjoy the talents of those with whom we attend. The talents displayed can be very amazing -- from fabulous musicians to actors to commedians.

We also do art shows. People of all ages bring their visual art pieces. These are displayed by age, and for each age group, there are ballots for voting for the best sculpture, best painting, best poetry, most colorful, etc.

Also, the festivals in our tradition bring about various activities that are really fun for groups, from children's fairs to special feasts.

Our church does family movie nights, game nights, volleyball (in the summer), talent shows. Some of the Sunday Schoool classes have pool parties or day trips. The kids have "mystery trips" in the summer -- usually to a local park -- and there is a church wide family trip to the zoo this weekend.

We have a board game night in the gym with an assortment of games - - including a giant TWISTER game on a painter's drop cloth. The youth and young adults love that - there are often 8 people out there at once. One corner has young kids' games (chutes & ladders type).

And once a year we have a TV GameShow night where we re-enact TV gamesshows like the Newlywed Game, What's My Line, Hollywood Squares, Wheel of Fortune, etc. We ask local merchants to donate prizes or coupons to be used as the prizes.

In the month of July for our Wed. fellowships we have some kind of water activity. Water gun/balloon fights, sprinklers. The last week we rent one of those big inflatable water slides. Our old church always has a father/child water gun fight on Father's Day. It's great. Alot of people bring lawn chairs and just come to watch.

Here's something I forgot about. I did it for one of my stepdaughter's birthdays when she was an older teen.

We had a game tournament. We brought every game we had in the house (a lot, because we were two combined families with four teens). Everyone chose the game or group they wanted to play and did it. When a winner was declared at each table, the winners went on to play the game they chose. The winners from the second set were declare, then they went on to play a third game. In the end, two champions played a fourth game, and the winner was declared over-all champion, winning a nice prize.

Throughout the evening, some dropped out for various reasons (tired, didn't like the next game, didn't want to go up against a particular winner, wanted to eat instead, etc.). It all worked out surprisingly well.

We provided pizza, ice cream, pop, and popcorn as refreshments. The birthday girl seemed to really enjoy it all.
