  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What Did You Get Last Sunday?

It would be more appropriate to transfer it to the 11th. Then Christmas is not truncated and the day is still observed. For the more stringent Anglo-Catholics, that date still falls within the Octave of the fixed calendar date.

What Did You Get Last Sunday?

Yesterday I was at my Presbyterian church. They had prepared the bulletin for Epiphany, which did not surprise me, although I would not personally have made that choice. What did surprise me was the entire church still being decked in Advent blue. I had packed white and they don't have a...

    Reappraising the Old High Churchmen

That's interesting reading. Knowing something of the author, who came up in the US Continuing Movement and whose father was one of the more polarizing bishops of the early years of said movement, I appreciated his introductory comments about how he probably would not have appreciated his book...

There's always that one thing you realize you need for cooking at the last minute. Last night my daughters and I were making cookies when I discovered I was nearly out of foil. I dashed out this morning and got some while the stores are still open.

What Did You Get Last Sunday?

Last Sunday was pageant Sunday at many of the local churches. The one I attend when I'm not booked doesn't have enough kids in regular attendance to pull off a pageant but they have an old set of costumes stashed away from a bygone era. I tolerate pageants when they are incorporated into the...

What Did You Get Last Sunday?

Probably. Christmas has been so thoroughly marketed as a family day and taken over by football and basketball that a lot of churches, even liturgical churches, cancel anyway. I haven't presided a Christmas Day service since I left Virginia; no one wants it. The last time Christmas fell on a...

What Did You Get Last Sunday?

All of my regular nearby congregations were closed Sunday due to severe weather. That's really thrown me off for Advent. I did see later that the Nazarenes were opened so I commend them for that. They must have a member with a snowplow.

I took the trash out around 3 p.m. and the lid of the container was partially iced up. I did get the job done though.

I felt bad for the Canadians because they were all on a flight to Toronto and it got canceled. Perhaps they spent an extra night in Zurich? There were 9 folks from the tour on the Chicago flight, including me and my daughters and mother.

We did have 3 Aussies and 5 Canucks and a couple from South Africa on the tour. The other 32 folks were American.

We ate lunch in an Asian buffet on the city centre in Munich. The waitress was trying to be personable and asked me if I was Australian! Apparently handsome white blokes who wear ear flap hats and speak good English are Australian. I was amused.

    St Nicholas

I dislike that language in the Nicene Creed. And it's a translation issue. The older texts read: "Of one substance with the Father". Let me explain. In the American context, where anyone with a little charisma and a 6th grade education and a King James Bible can scrape together a group of 20...

What Did You Get Last Sunday?

My older daughter was confused that it was already the second Sunday of Advent. We didn't go to a church service last Sunday though we did drop into a church after the Mass had ended and pray a few minutes. We were in Salzburg, Austria that afternoon.

A diorama of Bethlehem or Jerusalem or some mish-mash of the two. I had to set my mug of gluhwein down to snap the picture.

What Did You Get Last Sunday?

Depending on the church, the options were: Sunday Next Before Advent, Last Sunday of the Year, 24th Sunday after Pentecost, or Feast of Christ the King. I was serving a PCUSA where the calendar prescribed 24th Sunday after Pentecost but the organist and I both went with Christ the King (she's...
