Tensions escalate as India-Pakistan announce tit-for-tat measures

As we wrap up our live coverage, here’s a quick look at the measures India announced against Pakistan following the deadly attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people.

  • Suspension of the landmark Indus Waters Treaty which allowed for the sharing of river waters between the neighbours
  • Shutting of a key border crossing with Pakistan that allowed for the movement of people and goods
  • Suspension of all visa services for Pakistani nationals
  • Declaring military advisers in the Pakistani high commission in Delhi as ‘persona non grata’, ordering them to leave within a week
  • Reducing the number of Pakistani diplomats in India to 30 from 55 from 1 May.
In response, Pakistan has hit back with an almost identical set of reciprocal measures against Delhi:
  • Rejection of India’s suspension of the water treaty, saying any attempt to stop or divert the water “will be considered as an Act of War"
  • Suspension of all visas issued to Indian nationals under an exemption scheme with immediate effect
  • Suspension of all bilateral agreements with India
  • Reduction in the number of diplomats in the Indian high commission in Islamabad to 30
  • Closure of Wagah border with immediate effect
  • Closure of Pakistani air space to all Indian-owned or Indian-operated airlines
  • Suspension of all trade with India

India Suspends Indus Waters Treaty, Shuts Attari Border In Strong Response To Pakistan

Pahalgam Terror Attack: The Indus Waters Treaty was signed on September 19, 1960. The pact was signed between India and Pakistan, with the World Bank brokering the agreement. That treaty withstood three wars between India and Pakistan - in 1965, 1971, and 1999, but is now suspended indefinitely.

These rivers are the main sources of water supply for Pakistan and impacts tens of millions of people in that country.

From what I am seeing in the India media, and the fact that Modi's speech was in English, India might take some serious action. I don't think they will attack Pakistan itself, but Pakistan Occupied Kashmir is a possibility. I don't think nuclear weapons will be used in the event of a conflict in Pakistani Kashmir, but may use their tactical nukes if the Indian military invades Pakistan itself.

The terror attack was at a place in Kashmir I intended to visit next year on my trip to India. I do not intend to cancel those plans.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

The attackers apparently targeted Hindus specifically. In July the Amarnath Yatra begins which is a major Hindu pilgrimage event and goes on till early August. That has been attacked before. Hopefully security will be tight during then.

If that gets attacked, it's a guarantee of escalation between India and Pakistan. Which I think is what the terrorists were trying to do.

Who's got "two nuclear weapon countries start a war over a terrorist attack" on their bingo card?
While you’ve got a pretty good handle on American attitudes towards international affairs, for millions of my fellow citizens any issue between two nations (neither of which are the USA), is like “Charlie Brown adult-speech”.

Shoot! I'm going to go out on a limb and guess Trump has zero ability to play any musical instrument, let alone a fiddle.

This is not the first time since both countries acquired nuclear weapons that there were terrorist attacks. The 2001 parliament attack was probably the closest the two countries got into a war since the 1999 Kargil war.

This is the first major attack on civilians in nearly 30 years though as the previous attacks were against government entities such as Army bases or security forces.
