I've been spending the past two days watching Ezra Klein of the NY Times interview different people on this subject, and I think the reality is that the electorate has more ambiguity on many culture war issues than MAGA presumes.
That works both ways. The left has also been presumptuous. We have had significant cultural shifts over the last twenty years, and I'm here for it, but it wasn't as "real" as it seemed. Again, look at how quickly non-political institutions are changing their tune to fit the current administration's agenda. That is telling and we should take notice.
But... I do think that address was the most extreme and undignified display I've seen on television in my lifetime. Our country is on the brink of some kind of domestic unrest, I am afraid, similar to Italy in the 1970's. The center can't hold anymore, our country's sense of morality is too hollowed out and people don't know how to be civil anymore, they have rejected institutions and structures that could cultivate civility in the first place.
I'm sure we'll see some civil unrest, but I also think people are exhausted. Trump is exhausting, and this breakneck clip at which he's making changes will work against him. He only won because people on the fence were tired of the left. They will tire of this nonsense, too.
Cultural issues are a distraction from what we need from our government. Once the smoke clears and we have to live the results of Trump's hamfisted approach to change, perhaps people will come to their senses. One thing we need, if we do come to our senses, is more guardrails and restraints on the executive branch. The legislative branch has been missing in action for decades, and that has to change.
