  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I guess after 16 pages, my question is: What difference does it make?

The ancient Hebrews also thought there were multiple gods and that they just worshipped the best one.
It's an important distinction because, the early church had a different understanding of various topics in scripture. Cosmology being one of them.

So for example, cosmology, and the question of if Genesis describes a flat earth, in part, is dependent on the question of what the original authors intended to describe.

So an ancient isrealites for example, or more specifically, the authors of the old testament, they conveyed information that reflects ancient near east 3-tiered cosmology. So, earth set on pillars, 2 Samuel 2:4. Job 38:17, solid sky with "waters above", or Sheol below and the deep, such as in Jonah etc.

The early church fathers however, some believed that earth was flat. Some believed it had curvature and rested in an ocean, and some likely believed it to be round too. They had varying interpretations of "the waters above" some literal, some non literal.

So sometimes the early church aligned with the original context of Genesis. And sometimes the early church did not.

But for the purposes of understanding the Bible, ideally we would want to prioritize the understanding of the original authors and audience of the old testament, in priority over figures later in history, such as John Calvin, or the Pope, or st thomas Aquinas. Or even figures such as ireneaus or Augustine. Because later church fathers may or may not have aligned with the original authors.

I just love the way you all just won't let the flat earth theory die, lol

We cannot let the flat earth truth die as the spinning globe earth is biggest deceptive Satanic lie ever & their true intention is to hide God.

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
