Trump sues CNN claiming defamation, seeks $475 million in punitive damages

With the Dominion defamation lawsuits against Fox and others, it's only fair that Trump gets back at CNN for all those awful, awful stories tearing down his good name. A $475 million lawsuit should make those CNN pundits think twice before making such wild allegations. All Donald has to do is demonstrate how much he has been harmed by the allegations, and that the allegations are false.

Um... Donald might have a bit of a problem with that last part... Well, I'm sure his elite lawyers will come up with overwhelming arguments, right?

I hope his attorneys demanded payment up front, or they won't get paid when he loses.

yeah busy, maybe someone could find out why these prestigious law firms have worked for him, some for more three decades without ever getting paid.

then again, maybe they do.

Here's the actual complaint. His whole argument seems to be that CNN defamed him by using the term "big lie." It's an interesting take on defamation law.

To be fair, if Donald can demonstrate that he was completely delusional instead of lying, he might have a solid case.

Yeah, I don't think he has a very strong case here...

Certain media companies opting to settle with Nick Sandmann shouldn't give people the impression that "left-leaning media outlet said something that upset me, so they owe me money"

In order to prove a defamation case, you have to be able to prove some sort of negligence or intentional maliciousness that wasn't grounded in reality. Nick Sandmann had a viable case, Trump does not... and it should be noted that in the case of Sandmann, he had a viable case, and wasn't going for the kind of money that Trump is going for.

Sandmann was a nobody who had a public interaction with another nobody that was caught on video and amplified by media outlets including CNN. Trump was not only a public figure for 30 years *before* becoming president, but sought it out.

I tried reading the filing (the complaint), but it was a rather poor argument.

Now if you'd like to read a good legal submission try this one from The Onion. Yes, it's a real submission (an amicus brief to the US Supreme Court, check the URL) and it is both serious and uses parody at the same time to make its point about the 1st amendment protection of parody. (In a case about someone who mocked the local police and got arrested for it.)

Actually I'm rooting for him to win. Not because I liked that guy. Because the Western and more in particular American MSM has become a cesspool of partisanship, false reporting, manufactured outrage and political/social propaganda center.

In fact let's get all the MSM in on it MSNBC, CBS, Fox, WP, NYT... the whole shebang! The more $$$ they lose the better society will be.

Partisanship, manufactured outrage, and political propaganda are not libel or defamation. His claim is weak in an area (defamation of a public figure) that is *very* hard to demonstrate.

I know. And I really don't care by what means American MSM lose money. I just hope they do for the said cesspool they have became.

I can still hope Trump wins right? Nothing wrong with a hope. Yes I don't like that guy. But hey I hate American MSM more.

It is unreasonable I know I know. But I think I'm allowed to have this pettiness after all the MSM had done. At least I feel I'm entitled to this chance of a schadenfreude.

And I'm not saying it is a righteous thought

Trump might consider taking it easy on them now that they could become a supporter of his in the next presidential election. CNN’s recent firings may be tell-tale signs of directional change, which together with falling ratings could demonstrate just how delusional they have been with their failing leftist agenda.

A judge didn't buy this sort of thing last time he tried (and failed) to do so : U.S. District Judge Dismisses Trump Lawsuit Against Hillary Clinton and Others

In the 65-page ruling, Middlebrooks found that Trump’s lawsuit lacked structure, substance, and legal support, and wrote that Trump “is seeking to flaunt a two-hundred-page political manifesto outlining his grievances against those that have opposed him, and this Court is not the appropriate forum.”

No doubt some CNN commentator criticized his sentiments....

“He has a DEATH WISH,” Trump posted late Friday on his Truth Social platform, criticizing McConnell for agreeing to a deal to fund the government through December. He also disparaged McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, who served as Trump’s transportation secretary and was born in Taiwan, in racist terms, calling her “his China loving wife, Coco Chow!”

Just curious, is that the same judge appointed by Clinton?

There should be lawsuit reform. The size of the punitive damages people are asking for these days is horrible.

'A Trump spokesman said it was “absurd” to interpret the post as a threat or call for violence, suggesting the reference to a death wish was “political” rather than literal.'

I'm sure this is correct... just liberal mania.
