for war/genocide passages, I tend to read it as a figurative journey of my own inner battles

We teach them as for this verse it shows just how severe the sin of adultery was and if you study this topic throughout the Bible you get to David who committed adultery and had Uriah killed. God still restored David and called him after this a man after Gods own heart. Read psalm 51 Davids prayer of repentance and we can see God did forgive him. Then you get to the woman caught in the very act of adultery and Jesus was asked a question,the law says she shall be stoned but what do you say? Jesus said he who is without sin may cast the 1st stone at her and then wrote on the ground. The crowd left and Jesus was alone with the woman and asked her where were her accusers. Jesus told her, I do not condemn you, go and sin no more.
Finally look at Mathew 5 where Jesus says the law says not to commit adultery but then says if you look upon a woman to lust after her you have committed adultery in your heart. The thing is we need to work on laying aside sin and the issues are in the heart. The law even death for adultery is righteous and if everyone kept the law it there would be a much better family situation. The grace is found even in the OT and grace is still found. The standard of God is right and look at the world today has lost its salt and righteousness is ridiculed and sin abounds. There is something about having strong deterrents for doing something wrong. This is not a dark verse at all.

What we have to do is to determine who the intended audience was and why it was written. Are these verses written FOR us or TO us? As a gentile Christian believer, because Deuteronomy was written to Jews the book may be useful for my education but not for a set of direct instructions to me. Therefore I don't feel threatened by any of them.

God didn't change. There were reasons for the harsh Old Testament ways. It's hard for us humans to understand.

The law was our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ. No one could obey every law and that helps some to recognize the need for a Savior and to praise God for His mercy.

Another thought I had was that God's people needed to survive in order for His words to survive. But I'm only guessing.

God didn't change, but He did change the way He dealt with man.
Look at 2 Kings 1 where Elijah calls down fire from Heaven and kills 102 men for reasons of his own.
And then in Luke 9, end of the chapter, the disciples want to call down fire from Heaven just as Elijah did and Jesus rebuked them saying, "You do not know what spirit you are of".

Blessings: How does one come to deeply understand the Bible scriptures? By intense prayer and a mind set on TRULY desiring to understand the written world. Something needs to be said about this first.
No one can understand the scripture without first, having the Holy Spirit of God being given unto them. That of course brings up the question: How does one obtain the Holy Spirit? The answer is not as straight forward as is taught in most Denominations today.

First, the ones who have the Holy Spirit of God are called the Elect of God. They have been chosen by God and not by some man saying, now you are saved! Can man save man spiritually? In no way; that is why Jesus Christ was sent down into Judeah, to save the lost sheep of the house of Israel. He did not say that He came to save everyone, everywhere. Yes, I hear all the groans. Continue to read on and if it be granted to you, you shall come to understand what follows.

What did Jesus say in the so-called, New Testament about His purpose for coming onto the Earth? To do His Father's biding, given to Judeah the words which His Father gave to Him to give TO THEM.

It is very clear from the above scriptures who Jesus was sent to preach to, the Jews of Judeah, not the Gentiles. Why then is it that so many today take what He taught to the Jews and apply it to themselves? Woe be unto them!

From the above it is clearly seen that all that occurs pertaining to God's plan for mankind is done through Christ Jesus. The last ones appointed by God, according to the scriptures, were the apostles. Beware of those who claim to have been given a position in a church by man. For what is the true Church? Christ Jesus, who is setting at the right hand of God, the place of high honor. He is still ruling over His Elect. The churches of today have been set up by man, not by Christ Jesus. It is true that some may be given abilities to understand the truth, but those are the ones known by God.

This shows that the cost of disobeying and rejecting the Lord and going after other gods is very high and very unpleasant. The Scripture says "Knowing the terror of the Lord, we persuade men."

Learning the context of the verses quoted would be a great place to start. So would learning which covenant we live under, what we really would have been responsible for under the Old Covenant (for non-Jews, less than a lot of people assume), and how we should live under the New Covenant.

Covenant seems like a strange word to use to me. However, This One believes that one need follow the Holy Spirit's teachings given by Jesus Christ. I see the problem as to many try to follow the Jewish instructions instead of the apostle Paul's.
Therefore this One seeks to follow the Spirit of God.
