Food (la. cibus) is any substance or materials that is consumed to provide nutritional support for the body or for pleasure. It is usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. It is ingested and assimilated by an organism to produce energy, stimulate growth, and maintain life.

Historically, people obtained food from hunting and gathering, farming, ranching, and fishing, known as agriculture. Today, most of the food energy consumed by the world population is supplied by the food industry operated by multinational corporations using intensive farming and industrial agriculture methods.

Food safety and food security are monitored by agencies such as the International Association for Food Protection, World Resources Institute, World Food Programme, Food and Agriculture Organization, and International Food Information Council. They address issues such as sustainability, biological diversity, climate change, nutritional economics, population growth, water supply, and access to food.

The right to food is a human right derived from the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), recognizing the "right to an adequate standard of living, including adequate food", as well as the "fundamental right to be free from hunger".

The effect on world food prices from US corn being used for ethanol is miniscule compared to the effect of bad harvests in Russia, South America, Australia, thanks to natural phenomenon. I can already hear the complaints after America comes to the rescue: "You dumped corn in our market and drove our farmers out of business." As far as riots, look around. Everybody seems to have already caught that bug.

Printing American dollars to stimulate the economy have had a great effect on making food unaffordable.
Rising energy prices will even drive the prices up further.
The world depends on a strong American economy. That is just not happening now. The smaller pie that Americans are now eating just hasn't translated into larger pieces for the rest of the world. However smaller the American pie has become, lesser still is the pie that the worlds poor now have to survive on.

Of course the Clintons would be saying this. Ethanol isn't their favored choice of "green" energy.

If you want the truth about fuel v. food, click here.

Interesting.
Tobacco producers usually produced the most truthful, unbiased scientific reports about the effect of tobacco too.

According to statistics released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Labor, food prices for the first three months of the year rose at a rate that translates to an annual increase of 5.3 percent (adjusted for seasonal variations). That's slightly higher than last year's increase, and much higher than the increases in previous years. From 2001 to 2006, the price of food increased each year by an average of only 2.5 percent. According to the World Bank, the situation worldwide is more dire: food prices have nearly doubled over the past three years. That's erased a decade of economic gains for the poor in some countries.

Part of this increase is due to corn being diverted from use as animal feed and food to use as a feedstock for ethanol production.

Thus was back in 2008.

It only makes sense that when farmers have a economic incentive to grow corn for fuel, that's what they'll be doing, instead of growing corn for feed.

I agree with the Clintion's.

We must never use food for energy.
