I'm currently sitting my VCE exams and am going to Uni next year - to do what exactly well I don't quite know. But sinse the second day of prep I've wanted to be a teacher. I've done a heap of work experience at some schools (in fact, later this week I'm going to another campus of my own school for some drama teaching experience) and I'm wondering, what was your first teaching experience like?

For me, it was kinda scary. I've always been one of these students who sits in class and pays attention but then I know some there are also those who go to school only because they have to. I was a bit scared of what these kids might try to pull on me. But from my first experience I learned that you have to make it fun - it doesn't matter what you're teaching (or where - whether it be in a church or a senior classroom) you've got to make you lesson fun!

So yeah, what were your first experiences like?

When I taught for the first time I was sooooooooooo nervous!
But you should never let the children know that - else who else are they going to look to for stability in the lesson?
Being a teacher is like almost putting on an act, you need to act mad for children misbehaving (no matter how petty), you need to not batter an eyelid if something extreme happens.
Just stay calm at all times, dont shout too much and be firm but fair.

Thats my 2 pence worth at the moment

My first experience teaching was substitute teaching at a juvienle detention center. That was a little scary going to work, having to walk in the jail every morning, although I must admit it was a very safe environment. Since then I've taught middle school in inner schools. Somedays it can be a challenge, but its well worth it to know that I am making a small difference even if it is in a small way

My first experience teaching was at Sunday school and it was fun. It made me realise that I should do it professionally.

My first trained experience was real scary but as someone else said, it's basically all an act in front of the kids - you can't show your fear :D I taught a class of 7-8 year olds and they made me feel very welcome.

I now teach in a secondary school and it's very rewarding although tiring. Got 90 reports to start tonight.

G-d bless you in your new career!
