Just started reading a book called "The Dark Night of the Soul" by psychatrist and theologian Gerald May, M.D.
While I'm not sure if he's Catholic (he was affiliated with Washington Theological Union, but the book was favorably reviewed by America Magazine, John Welsh, O.Carm; and Richard Rohr, OFM.
It quotes Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross extensively.
It was written in the last year of May's life while he was awaiting a heart transplant. That--and his extensive psychiatric credentials--means that he looks at the dark night with a different perspective, seeing both its danger and opportunity, and in a way that may be quite useful for those who are in the throes of this experience.
I have a print copy, but I saw that it's available on Google Books as an e-book for a little over $8.
