“Every single person who registers to vote in a Federal election must prove they’re an American citizen first” under the bill, Johnson told reporters. “Our bill would put us on par with virtually every other democracy around the world that also prohibits non-citizen voting.”

This is one bill the country should be able to get together on.

So “states’ rights” are going to take another hit from “conservatives”?
Good times!

Most voters have voted previously and have been registered for years. What do they plan to do? Make everyone re-register with their birth certificates or naturalization papers?

That would put an undue burden on states if they wanted it completed before the November election.

They are grasping at straws, looking for some bizarre reason to invalidate the election and create havoc and mob violence like he did in 2020.

In addition, Speaker Johnson, who was part of the election deniers/election overturning cabal in the Republican Party, lacks "election integrity" himself. Every phony charge they put forward was found to be groundless. No legislator who still claims the 2020 election was invalid has enough "integrity" to pass election laws. Their motivations and honesty are highly suspect.

How prevalent is the problem that it needs immediate legislation to address it?

Thank you. It is hard to think of a reason to be against voter ID with the exception being those who wish to cheat. It's like showing your ID when submitting a check as payment or cashing a check at the bank.

It only applies to federal elections.
Which are administered by the States, according to the Constitutions, Laws and regulations of each state; what compelling Federal interest is this safeguarding?

Make everyone re-register with their birth certificates or naturalization papers?

I think that's what it would have to be, yes.

For people who don't have their birth certificates on hand (e.g., if the papers got lost in a fire or flood) and have to request a replacement from their birthplace, there will likely be a small fee. In my birth state, it's $12. I hope Congress is willing to fund these fees, poll taxes being illegal.

Because the ID costs money and time and is designed to prohibit citizens from voting.

No it's not. Cashing a check is not a constitutional right.

Once I cashed a check at Citizens Bank, a Citizens Bank check, and they not only checked my ID but made me give a thumb-print!

They are more careful who they let into the DNC conventions than who they want voting...

I recall Democrats in 2021 trying to pass voting bills, that would have included provisions to ensure fair elections, yet Republicans (and some of the members of this forum in support of this Bille) decried the Democrat sponsored bills as violating "States Rights," by trying to dictate security measures in federal elections. Odd how these same people have changed their tune when it is a Republican sponsored bill -- they have no issue with federal voting statutes that would overrule state election laws for federal elections.

There was a bill that did the OPPOSITE of the bi-partisan Jimmy Carter commission recommendation and promoted mail-in ballots, and I don't recall voter ID either.
