Trying to get back into some model painting, posting here to give myself some inspiration - this a primed cruiser
from the reboot of the StarBlazers series I loved as a kid. I was really impressed with the kit quality and detail; didn't
even need model glue to assemble

Haven't done this in a long time, was never great at it. The initial color coat I gave it was too dark, but when I went over it with a watered down brush gave it a nice acid-washed metal feel and let the detail come back though again

Looks great. If I didn't already have too many projects going on, I might like to do that.

Thanks! I decided not to do too much else with it, adding more colors just seemed to make it more cartooney, so I mostly stuck to highlighting the guns and engine ports

I have a 3d printer that I am very bad at using, but got some some ship models from the internet.
3d prints can have a variety of issues; these models I decided to print in two halves and glue together
at the end. But... had some warping on the pieces so my cruisers have a little bit of a cleft lip problem ;)
(you can really see it on the larger black unprimed ones).

Trying another batch now with the printer bed heat turned up a notch, seems to be getting better results.

New batch of ships rolling out of the space doc. Hotter print bed, sanding before gluing, better glue helped a lot.
I have a feeling printing these in 2 pieces vertically might do better or be less subject to warping.
But, this is definitely an improvement on the first batch of prints.

Here's a Sketchup model of a little utility Cruiser I made. He's not for combat. "I'll refuel you - just don't shoot at me!" he says. He might like mining asteroids too, I'm not sure.

OK. Learning a bit from this. I can do single piece vertical prints of the ships pretty well now. The trick is using the Brim that Cura can apply (if you ask for it) around the base. Since these ships have engines on the bottom, they just aren't anchored well enough without it, break loose or start to twist while still printing and then you get warped, twisted melted looking post-battle ships. But with the brim applied, that doesn't happen. At the end, I can just pull them right off it, clip the thread. Using a cigarette lighter applied briefly also seems good to clean up any small hanging strings of plastic in hard to reach places.

Fleet of Kushan resource collectors (Homeworld 1) , just trying to make ends meet...
I always loved this game :)

Modeled in Sketchup based on some images found online

Printed on 3d printer Ender v3; those "poles" they are mounted on are Q-tip sticks;
took me forever to get a good diameter for them

Anyway, this was my goal for the day to get a set of the resource collectors painted

Got some better paints, and a magnifiying lens w lighted stand really helps. Stands were retooled to work with Q-tips and have more slots. I've found a good online set for the Homeworld ships, so I've been using prints for those since it was an old favorite. Just (almost) finished some Kushan light corvettes. Giving my eyes a little rest now lol.

Somewhere in there I ordered a replacement fan for one that had been getting noisy in my 3d printer, and that went really well as it was becoming a problem. Fortunately it was the easiest one to fix (the thing has 4 fans and some of them require a lot of work to get at)

Nice work on the model!

I've been thinking about getting back into plastic models. One of my childhood hobbies was building model cars, planes, and ships. Painting was the weakest of my model-building skills, but my completed models were passable and lots of fun to build.

Painting these micros is tough; my eyes are not great and my hands a little shakey - I got a magnifying stand. good brushes and some better paints though from the hobby shop really helped vs a set from Joanne's Fabrics didn't work so well (a lot cheaper at Joanne's though, and I can still use them to mix in colors). Heavy Corvettes joining the pursuit of some bomber wings... ;)

Unfortunately I got a new laptop and it doesn't have Sketchup on it which is now like $500 to purchase.
But I did recently download some models from Thingiverse and print them, have not painted yet
