The writers said, it's not about the mysteries it's about the characters. So then why put the mysteries in there at all. Why bother?

The story could have been about a regular island just focusing us on the characters. Did they want to draw us into the story with mysteries that they were not going to answer?

It's like reading a detective novel with mysteries and you try to figure out "who done it "and you are expecting to find out on the last page. Mystery books are a fan favorite and they like figuring out and solving the mysteries.

Then we are told that the mysteries don't matter and that the author is not going to tell you who did it. This story is really about the main hero and the rest of the characters and by the way they all perished, went to a church and opened a door and saw a bright light.

We went to all the trouble of reading the first 19 chapters and enjoying them very much only to be told that nothing we just read really matters. Then on chapter 20 we are told that story is really about "THIS" -

"The story was about the characters all along. We did not care about the mysteries. We threw them in there to get you to buy the book and to read the last chapter at the end about the characters being in a kind of limbo."

Surprise!

Desmond: "None of it matters Jack!"

:doh:DOH!

P.S. I keep reading on the web that some people were satisfied by the ending, but they never say why. There are tons of people who can say this was not the ending they thought was coming and can give millions of reasons why.

Oh, there are *some* reasons to like the finale: it was great on account of little details - characters being reunited, scenes alluding to previous signature shots, lovers saying farewell - that sort of thing. It failed on the Big Picture, but was quite successful as far as a smaller scale was concerned.

Of course, with the timeless post-mortem limbo being what it is, it would not have mattered at all whether the MiB left the island or not, or whether the Ajira plane managed to start or not. Nothing of what happened plot-wise made any difference, except perhaps as a prelude to the happy get-together in the Beyond. Everybody dies, so that's that. Why care about the survivors if we just reason that we're all going to croak one way or another, anyway?

The main story could have happened anywhere. It could have happened in L.A.

The people could have got killed in a bus accident. Then in season six they all went to purgatory and waited to go into the bright light.

Or it could have happened in the wild west, on the moon or during the civil war and have the same ending.

So why did any of the stuff that happened on the island matter?

Did any of the stuff that happened to you in high school matter? You could have been born anywhere, died, and gone to heaven. Your life could have happened anywhere, at any time. Would it even have mattered?

...

Everything that happened on the island was real, and it mattered. For Jack, as Christian said, it was the most important time of his life, and he shared it with those people. It all mattered to their lives and to where they ended up (dead or alive) after their time on the island.

Some people only watch TV and movies to relax, turn off their brains (somewhat anyway, lol) and just sit back and enjoy the ride. They use entrainment as an opportunity to stop having to think so much. So for them the finale was just a nice sweet ending to a good ride. The details don't matter to them. I kinda envy them to a degree because I'd have enjoyed the finale more if I wasn't so into the mystery and details.
