Please help me try to figure out this latest version of Christian social charity.

A certain multi-billionaire lady watched the relief packages being prepared for storm victims in the gulf states. She objected to the inclusion of emergency clothing. The multibillionaire said they should pack food and power generators and let the victims go naked.

Hmmm... What do you think?

Ought we Christians embrace these kind words as our new standard? I dunno, but I try to keep an open mind on things.

Theresa Kerry was this rich lady. I feel we should take her at her word. Her husband wants to be the most powerful man in the world in November. If he wins, would she influence his treatment of the poor and those in need of clothing?

From what I understood, she said they should go naked for awhile in response to the information there too many clothing containers in hurricane relief shipments to the Carribbean than those containing food and water. At least, that's what I understood from Newsweek.

I've now read a short news piece about this, and it does seem that Kerry was making a reasonable enough comment about prioritising what was sent, and that if necessary, children, particularly, should go naked for a few days...

Doesn't the term 'gulf states' usually refer to Florida, etc, rather than caribbean island states,Sharp?

And you want me to vote for Bush,I take it?!! ;)

Just wondering where you got your information from, Sharp?
Recordings of her remarks were making the rounds all over talk radio last week the day after she made them. I thought this was common knowledge and that everybody would get the irony immediately when I first posted this. Your question indicates to me that this must not have been publicized by the mainstream media. Shall I just chalk that up to one more example of selective bias in favor of the democrat?

I don't care which party says something like that. It should be fair game. If the most powerful man in the world is married to a woman who influences him, well, you can appreciate my concern for the poor. Laura Ingraham said that when you are worth a BILLION dollars, you can get away with saying a lot of things that the rest of us can't.

Not that I would ever defend or side with a sensationalist like Sharp, but what difference does that make ? The comment was still insensitive.

Admittedly, I haven't seen the context yet...

Old Rooster,

Let the voice of the Proletariat be heard!
Unfortunately, it's those rich "parasites" that control the country by manipulating government, businesses, and banking with their wealth. This is why we need a new party in office. Soon enough the voters will realize this and Socialism will be the inevitable result. After learning lessons from other leaders abuse of Socialism, (what worked and what didn't) we should experience a very good change which will help all people.

I read the other day that the rate of abortion has risen under Bush as the poor have become poorer and poor women feel less able to keep their babies, and unemployed men are less likely to feel able to stand by their women.

Of course this won't be true of all who are poor, but poverty and unemployment can cause despair and depression and make people think twice about having another mouth to feed.

It's nice to find someone else who sees this. I had written on this subject a few weeks ago, and it's mentioned on the Socialism For America site. The basic concept is that under Socialism with a fair redistribution of the national wealth to the poorer classes (Those who most often seek abortions) that the rate of abortion will decline naturally. I don't think it would cease entirely, but it would decrease. Bush may be against abortion personally, but that wont change the law. I believe abortion should be approached from other angles different from how it's been approached. Economic overhaul and provision for the poor and middle class is one angle that may help solve the issue.

Not really like socialism. Socialism has some similarities but then so does capitalism

If we have given our lives as disciples to Jesus, then we don’t need to run after material possessions, we seek first the Kingdom and all the rest will be given. If we have given our lives then we are to serve God and serve others, all we have in material possessions belongs to God not us, they are there for Kingdom purposes. We don’t have to give everything to the poor to inherit the Kingdom (Luke 18) unless we aren’t prepared as wealthy people to give half our possessions (Luke 19) but that always was what God had required of His people. (Luke 18:9-10), to give the tithe and offerings without neglecting justice, mercy and faithfulness. (Matt 23:23) or without loving God and be Holy and righteous in our lives (Matt 23:28)

Helping the materially poor and needy continues regardless of the main task to preach the gospel.

Acts 6 “In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food, So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word."… So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.”
