Canada ranks third in immigration integration: study

nternational researchers are applauding Canada’s efforts at helping newcomers integrate in a report that ranks this country third in how it reaches out to its immigrant population.Canada placed behind Sweden and Portugal, up two notches compared to last year, in the annual Migration Integration Policy Index released Monday by the British Council and the Migration Policy Group, organizations that track immigration policy in dozens of countries.
About 100 researchers from around the world looked at 150 factors, broken into seven categories, such as access to education and the labour market, family reunion, long-term residence and political rights.
Canada moved up on the list because of the federal government’s recent focus on recognizing the education and credentials of immigrants, said Jan Niessen, director of the Migration Policy Group.

Educators unions and unionists in general will not be so happy to hear this. This does not serve their interests at all to have immigrants bypass them and go straight into the marketplace.

Bravo Harper!

I don't recall which international agency that did the research, but Toronto, Ontario is now "The most ethicaly diverse city in the world".

It wouldn't surprise me.
Canada has the same problem of a flat-lining birth rate as most developed countries. Immigrants, and in particular, well-educated, skilled immigrants, are going to increasingly competed for the countries of the developed world in order to keep the economies from flatlining too, and social programs to be maintained.

Programs such as family-reunification work well for the immigrants, and may well be the price that has to be paid to compete for them, but recognizing existing skills is the best way to help the native economy as well.
