About cats: It might depend on context. We have one, not exceptionally intelligent, that does seem to inspect herself in mirrors. OTOH, another, much smarter, didn't. Yet both learned they can watch us without turning their heads by looking in a mirror, and behave like they know it's us and not some stranger.
