Albo, Labor and Lambie think Australia should be able to tell every other nation what is legal to be watched in their territories. would they really be happy for North Korea, Iran and China to dictate what can be shown in Australia? Tanya Plibersek said we should respect the victim, except the victim didn't want it censored, isn't that disinformation? It is more about protecting a special community from being protected from the actions of one of their followers. Oh and taking down meme's of Albo being the absolute the clown he is.

I've heard about this here in the UK - through youtube, not MSM though. The lack of self-awareness is astonishing. In another breath the same people will be criticising other countries for censorship, especially where those countries aren't seen as "progressive".

Everyone in a free country should be entitled to that; so I'm against any form of censorship except for when people call for physical violence against others. The AU Labour Government stance on this is appalling indeed. It's outright hilarious they think they are entitled to censorship on internet platforms worldwide; imagine if countries like Iran and North-Korea would take the same stance and demand take-downs in Australia or Europe for content they don't like.

I think there is a level of misinformation through various channels as to the specific issue.

The general run of the press reporting suggests that he was ordered (or asked) to take it down and refused. My initial reaction was simply that no one should be above the law, neither Kings nor Priests, neither Presidents nor the Rich and Fabulous.

Then I came across this from the Guardian

Australia’s prime minister has labelled X’s owner, Elon Musk, an “arrogant billionaire who thinks he is above the law” as the rift deepens between Australia and the tech platform over the removal of videos of a violent stabbing in a Sydney church.
On Monday evening in an urgent last-minute federal court hearing, the court ordered a two-day injunction against X to hide posts globally containing the footage of the alleged stabbing of Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel on 15 April. The eSafety commissioner had previously directed X to remove the posts, but X had only blocked them from access in Australia pending a legal challenge.
Anthony Albanese on Tuesday said Musk was “a bloke who’s chosen ego and showing violence over common sense”.

What 'X' (formerly Twitter which Musk owns) has done is to apply geopolitical blocking to the material. That means that for the average Australian access to it has been removed, and it has been effectively taken down. If you wanted to view the content on Twitter you would need to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) set up as to disguise where you were originating the search. That is not impossible, however, for the majority of Australians, it is going to be too much effort.

I am inclined to think that Musk has effectively complied with the order. Geopolitical Tags have been used to keep various search engines out of access to citizens in certain authoritarian states and filter/censor the content of material seen by people in their region. The issue of course is that the reach of these companies is vast and effective whereas the Government has sovereign authority over a geo-political region.

The current AU law the AU Federal Government is using to block certain 'inappropriate' content is a bad law as its wording allows it to be used at will whenever political incumbents deem some content 'inconvenient'. Similar attempts to censor straight news coverage do not exist in other Western areas like Europe or the US. Suppressing the dissemination of simply news (in either word or video form) is bad for any democracy.

X complied with the AU take-down order but still even that AU take-down order is bad and makes AU look silly in the eyes of the rest of the free world. Citizens/residents should have the right to know/see/discuss what happens in their society or elsewhere in the world.

The international take-down order beyond that is ludicrous.

Speaking of censorship, is Australia thinking of banning TicTok? Or is that just a U.S. thing.
Not yet, but the use of WeChat (heavily monitored and censored by the Chinese Government) is widespread among the Chinese diaspora in AU. Similar to the USA, Australia is in a cold-war situation with China.

There is legislation to further empower the government to censure moving through our Federal Parlaiment, that is why this issue was jumped on, it was as much a political leverage. I expect very little from Albo, he is IMHO, the least impressive PM we have had in some time. (Even Abbott and Gillard were better IMHO.) Richard Marles, the DPM and Defence Minister is far more impressive politician.

What is really disappointing this was the opposition leader Dutton, initially flubbed it.

Federal Court has lifted the eSafety Commissioner global take down order on X on a interim basis until the court case. Although the wording of the decision does not look good for Albo and our international eKaren.
