The protesters stop traffic, blocking off ambulances and other vital services that can cost lives, besides threatening Jews with genocide.
Yes, it turns out that “freedom of speech” in democratic-republics is “messy”.
This is complaining that the system is working exactly as it should.

Freedom of speech does NOT give a person the right to attack Jews or block streets so ambulances and other necessary services cannot function. Those are crimes. What they are doing is making it unsafe for Jews to exercise their freedom of speech and unsafe to go to school. This is worse than January 6th, there are more people in mobs around the country and it hearkens back to when blacks were prevented from going to white schools. The federal government the moved in an protected the black children, this is what Joe Biden should do--send in troops.

Key word " peaceful ". She obviously does not condone the radical bad actors in the mix.

The real messy, dangerous "freedom of speech" is happening downtown from Columbia on the courtroom steps.
Are the students taking their protest cues from the disgraceful, dangerous, martyred whining of a former president?
Did they grow up thinking this kind of "communication" is normal?

She needs to speak out against the violent ones and those who are advocating genocide. Advocating genocide is a hate crime--why hasn't the Justice Department acted?

Do you realize Jewish students at Columbia have been forced to go remote because of the unrest on campus, and that Joe Biden has not dispatched troops to protect them? The Justice Department needs to quit focusing on getting Biden's political opponents and focus on enforcing federal hate crime statutes and protect Jewish students so they can walk campuses in safety.

Chanting death to America and physical confrontations with Jewish students seems to be the hallmark of the rapid rise of Antisemitism and is supported by AOC and numbers of others on the left.

It is public, it is obvious and it is as bigoted and biased as it can get. Our Democratic Leaders are giving them support and not one is calling for it to end. What next the US equivalent of a program against Jews?

What is your opinion of these protesters?

‘Not like other Passovers’: hundreds of Jewish demonstrators arrested after New York protest seder

Hundreds of Jewish anti-war demonstrators have been arrested during a Passover seder that doubled as a protest in New York, as they shut down a major thoroughfare to pray for a ceasefire and urge the Senate majority leader, Chuck Schumer, to end US military aid to Israel.

About 300 people were detained near Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer’s Brooklyn home

“We as American Jews will not be used, we will not be complicit and we will not be silent. Judaism is a beautiful, thousands-year-old tradition, and Israel is a 76-year-old colonial apartheid state... This is the Passover that we take our exodus from Zionism. Not in our name. Let Gaza live.”
-- Morgan Bassichis

“We pray for everyone besieged, for everyone facing starvation and mass bombardment.” -- Rabbi Miriam Grossman

“Our Judaism cannot be contained by an ethno-state, for our Judaism is internationalist by its very nature. Our Judaism cannot be protected by the rampaging military of that ethno-state, for all that military does is sow sorrow and reap hatred, including hatred against us as Jews.” -- Naomi Klein

The public image of the far left openly supporting antisemitism and turning a deaf ear and blind eye to people burning flags and chanting for the genocide of the Jews in Israel is a real issue.

Caution: the following is an observation and personal opinion

Those self identifying as Democrats did not support the national guard coming on campus to allow free and equal access to blacks in the 60’s. And today there are those who self identify as Democrats who will not bring in the national guard to allow free and equal access to Jews.

It seems history is repeating itself.

That is only an observation and opinion - it could be correct or completely mistaken.

It should be the same sentence for the same crime. People block streets and refuse to leave when police order them to should be given the same fines. If any Jews were to advocate for the extermination of Muslims that would be a hate crime, just like anyone advocating the extermination of Jews.

I Am a Jewish Student at Columbia. Don’t Believe What You’re Being Told About ‘Campus Antisemitism’

The White House, Congressional Republicans, and cable news talking heads would have you believe that the Columbia University campus has devolved into a hotbed of antisemitic violence – but the reality on the ground is very different. I still can't quite believe how the events on campus over the past few days have been so cynically and hysterically misrepresented by the media and by our elected representatives.

Smears from the press and pro-Israel influencers, who have levied charges of antisemitism and violence against Jewish students, are a dangerous distraction from real threats to our safety.

Just over a day after the encampment was formed, university President Minouche Shafik asked and authorized the New York Police Department to clear the lawn and load 108 students – including a number of Jewish students... One Jewish student told me that she and her fellow protesters were restrained in zip-tie handcuffs for eight hours and held in cells where they shared a toilet without privacy. The NYPD chief of patrol John Chell later told the Columbia Spectator that “the students that were arrested were peaceful, offered no resistance whatsoever, and were saying what they wanted to say in a peaceful manner.”

I implore you, as our Jewish Voice for Peace chapter does, to consider whether arresting Jewish students keeps us and Columbia safe.

It’s true, the fact that CUAD organizers fundamentally reject bigotry and hate has not stopped unrelated actors from exploiting opportunities to shamefully harass Jewish students with grotesque or antisemitic statements... But the often off-campus actions of a few unaffiliated individuals simply do not characterize this disciplined student campaign. The efforts to connect these offensive but relatively isolated incidents to the broader pro-Palestinian protest movement mirror a wider strategy to delegitimize all criticism of Israel.

A Passover Seder service was held at the encampment. Would an antisemitic student movement welcome Jews in this way? I think not.

Here’s what you’re not being told: The most pressing threats to our safety as Jewish students do not come from tents on campus. Instead, they come from the Columbia administration inviting police onto campus, certain faculty members, and third-party organizations that dox undergraduates.

Jonathan Ben-Menachem is a PhD student at Columbia University.

Jewish protesters at Columbia support movement, say antisemitism is being weaponized against them

One Iranian Jewish student, Lea, has been suspended and noted that she and fellow students "proudly put everything we have on the line, because our vision is unclouded." She said she saw the same trauma and pain of her own family reflected in the plight of Palestinians, moving her to join the protest.

"More than 15 Jewish students were arrested, suspended and evicted as punishment for protesting on their own campus," said Lea, a student who identified by first name only. "For singing songs of love and liberation for Columbia's divestment and a free Palestine."
