Well, before I can answer, what do you mean by "nature?" Physical nature? Mental nature? Emotional nature? Spiritual nature?

Depending on what's meant, my answer could be very different.

(Don't think about it too hard - this thread's not really all that serious)

I think it can be the combination of all of the above you have mentioned.

I would say primarily regret, that can change a person and want them to be a better person.
Just my humble oppinion :)

Then again Alcohol can help. :D

Depends upon what you mean by change. We are all subject to mature over time, but that isn't the same change as a drug addict who gets their life together.

A very large category of "other"--- illness and injury:

Schizophrenia

Bipolar disease

Stroke

Closed or open head injury

Anoxic brain damage

Temporal lobe epilepsy

Some brain tumors (University of Texas sniper Charles Whitman had a gliobastoma in the hypothalamus)

Many kinds of poisoning, mercury especially

Many kinds of infection

Some endocrine disorders, like Cushing's Syndrome

Many kinds of dementia--Alzheimer's Disease, Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease, etc.

And many, many others...

Bipolar disease (or disorder) is what used to be called manic-depressive illness. Probably caused by an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain. When severe, it can lead to suicide in the depressed phase, and highly abnormal, psychotic behavior in the manic phase.

LOL, yeah, I was just being a smart aleck. I happen to have Bipolar Affective Disorder (Type I). I was diagnosed when I was 16, but have never heard it called Bipolar disease. The way you phrased it gave me a giggle.

I know. The DSM officially calls it Bipolar Disorder. Bipolar disease is an older term, but it's sometimes still used in translations of the European literature.

Personally, I like it better. There is still some stigma that mental illnesses are not real, pathophysiologic diseases. So it gets the point across better by calling it a "disease," rather than the more ambiguous term "disorder."
