Were the apostles "praying" by talking to Jesus?

John Frame says that prayer is not only commanded but us communing with God, and prayer also changes things in his triangle diagram in his systematics. So I was wondering if our prayers that are spontaneous "tainted" by sin? Are we harming ourselves by praying if we are too sinful similar to partaking of the Lord's supper if unworthy? It's a confusing topic to me as there are differences between the Reformed and Lutheran view of prayer as a means of grace. The Lutherans seem to be a lot more cautious as to the purpose of prayer and it's role in our sanctification. As an analogy, the Reformed would just talk to Jesus whereas the Lutherans would guard their language before speaking so as to not use the wrong form: Frame cites 1 Thess 5:17 while the Lutheran dogmaticians tend to cite the sorcerers who used Jesus name as a magic formula for selfish goals. So praying too much in the wrong way can lead to destruction and works-based self-justification maybe.... so then should we be more hesitant to pray or talk to Jesus or not? Were the disciples hesitant?
