This is a somewhat ephemeral index - cities can be in the top 10 one year, and way down the line the next year, and then bounce back a couple of years later.

The UK capital London and Sweden’s capital Stockholm both found themselves falling down the rankings, with the former dropping 12 places to 46th and the latter dropping 22 spots to 43rd position.

Meanwhile the capital of South Australia, Adelaide, dropped 27 places.

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2022 Global Liveability Index released today named Melbourne as Australia’s most liveable city and joint 10th in the world, while it pushed Adelaide down 27 places – the third-biggest ranking drop of any city.

What's liveable depends a lot on
what you can afford.

It's very simple. The US had a large propaganda bureau for years called Hollywood.

US cities are not designed to be livable, they are designed to be drivable.

If even such elementary things like pavements for people to walk to places are missing (not to say cheap, clean and safe public transport, shops, healthcare and schools in a walkable distance from residential buildings etc), the city can hardly get into the top livable places.

I would love to live in Europe but that's just not a possibility for me since all of my family is here in the good old US of A. Europe is beautiful.

I would like to try to live in USA for a while, for comparison. But the process of immigration into USA is so complicated that its probably not worth it (for example I would need to find a US based employer, remote employer in the EU is not enough, because of the US immigration laws).

And all the forms and bureaucracy, interviews with various immigration officials, finding all the documents... oh mine. God bless the EU for its free movement between countries.

The first nine are in countries with very progressive social policies. Not sure about Osaka.
