Berean Literal Bible Matthew 12:

43 Now when the unclean spirit is gone out from the man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and does not find it.
Do these places exist in the spiritual realm or the physical realm? Or are they metaphors of what?

Luke 8:

26 And they sailed down to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 And He having gone forth upon the land, a certain man out of the city met Him, having demons, and a long time he was not wearing clothing and did not abide in a house, but in the tombs.
Demons were comfortable among tombs.

28 And having seen Jesus, having cried out, he fell down before Him and said in a loud voice, “What to me and to You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore of You that You might not torment me!” 29 For He was commanding the unclean spirit to come out from the man. For it had seized him many times, and he was bound, being kept with chains and shackles. And breaking the chains, he was driven by the demon into the deserts.
They didn't mind deserts either when they were inside a human.

30 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
And he said, “Legion,” because many demons were entered into him. 31 And they were begging Him not to command them to depart into the abyss.
They were scared of the abyss.

32 And there was a herd of many pigs feeding there in the mountain, and they begged Him that He would allow them to enter into them; and He allowed them.
33 And the demons having gone out from the man, entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake, and was drowned.
What were these waterless places?

  1. They were a metaphor for uninhabited places due to lack of water. This particular demon was looking for a human/home to rest. Water supports life.
  2. They were physical places where the demon was in transit. It had just come out of a human body, i.e., a watered place, and was looking for a watered place to occupy. Demons were spiritual beings that could interact with the physical world somehow.
  3. They were also spiritual places where they could not rest due to some sort of spiritual motions. It had to keep moving for some spiritual reason, perhaps due to some kind of spiritual heat. That's spiritual dynamics.
Spiritually speaking, it needed watered places to rest. Ironically, they drowned in a water lake when they were in the pigs. The "waterless places" serve both as a literal description within the spiritual worldview and as a metaphor for the restless, unfulfilled nature of evil spirits outside their human hosts. They are parasites seeking inhabitation and destructive to their hosts.

Isaiah 34:8-15
"For it is the day of the LORD’S vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion.

And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch.

It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever.

But the cormorant and the bittern shall possess it; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it: and he shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion, and the stones of emptiness.

They shall call the nobles thereof to the kingdom, but none shall be there, and all her princes shall be nothing.

And thorns shall come up in her palaces, nettles and brambles in the fortresses thereof: and it shall be an habitation of dragons, and a court for owls.

The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest.

There shall the great owl make her nest, and lay, and hatch, and gather under her shadow: there shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her mate."

The screech owl (Lilith): Strong's Hebrew 3917
Definition: a female night-demon

The 'waterless places', the 'Wilderness', are where the 'Eggs' need to be hatched. The Serpent is good at casting 'Water' out of its mouth...

Isaiah 34:16
"Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them."
