Missouri House votes to make it harder to amend constitution, with controversial language reinstated

The Missouri House on Thursday voted 102-49 to send the legislation back to the Senate after amending it. Now, it must either be approved by the Senate or the two chambers need to work on a compromise resolution.

Filibuster by Missouri Democrats stretches into a second day.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A nonstop, overnight filibuster by Democratic lawmakers in the Missouri Senate passed the 24-hour point on Tuesday as they try to reign in a Republican proposal to make it harder to amend the state constitution.

Missouri GOP rethink bill making it harder to change constitution, after record-setting filibuster

Missouri Senate Democrats ended their 50-hour-long, round-the-clock filibuster after a proposal restricting citizen initiative petitions got sent back to committee. Members of the far-right Freedom Caucus said the decision showed a lack of courage from fellow Republicans.

Sep 6: A Missouri judge ruled Friday that an abortion rights campaign did not meet legal requirements to qualify its constitutional amendment initiative for the November ballot, potentially thwarting a years-long effort to undo the state’s near-total abortion ban.

Sep 10: Just several hours before ballots were to be finalized, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled Tuesday afternoon that a measure to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution is specific enough to present to voters in November.

Only days earlier, a lower-court judge had ruled the ballot measure invalid because it does not identify which laws it would repeal.

Sep 16: Missouri Senator Josh Hawley rallied against Amendment 3 at an event earlier this month, falsely connecting the ballot question on abortion access to gender-affirming care for young people.

Sep 30: In September, the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph sent a letter to every household registered with a Catholic parish in the area urging recipients to vote against legalizing abortion in Missouri.

In the letter, Bishop Johnston wrote falsely that any health care professional — including a dental hygienist or pharmacist — could legally perform an abortion.

Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft made similar [false] claims in his ballot summary for Amendment 3.

[Ultimately a judge issued alternative ballot summaries removing such false and misleading claims.]

People who see their referendums tossed by biased judges need to realize they need to vote for people who respect democracy. The people currently in office don't represent them.

I live in Missouri and I pray that I am among the majority in the state who are pro-life and anti-abortion.
My prayers are with you from your fellow neighbor. I don’t live too far from the border, but never been there.

Shouldn't this impact their tax-exempt status?

"Religious institutions are allowed to urge their congregations to vote for or against a ballot initiative. Endorsing a specific candidate, however, puts the organization at risk to lose its tax-exempt status with the IRS."

Absolutely not.

It’s what the Church teaches that is non-negotiable.

Nice try, though.

My parish did the same thing last weekend.

I’m happy they’re speaking out against legalized abortion and for the rights of life.

Blessings

Pope Francis found serious faults with both candidates and urged people to vote their consciences and this is how it should be.

I wonder how many mailers go out to encourage people to become foster parents.
Such as saintly women like Michele Bachman or Amy Coney Barrett? ;)
