Have your lamps ready? Filled with Oil?

Here's a video that shows how to make a simple oil lamp that contains the flame yet brightly shines to give enough light. Can be carried from room to room safely unlike a candle.

In order to magnify the light, put a small mirror behind it to reflect the light as well as heat.

Put behind it works better as it reflects into the room. But you can see it doubles the light.

I've made my own! I got the supplies from Amazon and I did some modifications and substitutions I'll tell you about.

First what I ordered:

The jars

$4.61 a pc at Amazon
Fiberglass wicking ( the one I just ordered is sold out) but you just need 1/8" thickness by about 3 ft (I got a pack of 5 ft for $8.00)

Gold colored wick holders - Used instead of the copper tubes shown in video

I had Stainless steel wire on hand - gauge 18 works best.

You'll need Pliers, strong wire cutters and something to shape the wire around. A plastic pill bottle will work fine, you don't have to build a fixture like he did.

Now I made three of these like the video and then for the 4th one I didn't do the curled up lifter, I just folded the wire in half as seen in the photo in front of my Palm tree.

I actually found something similar at Lehmans which you can buy ready made for $21 for One. They call it a olive oil lamp so you can use this with other oils too, just don't mix them together.

I also got this clean burning liquid parafin which isn't included in the Lehmans one.

So I made them myself for about $7.30 each. That's only 1/3 of the pre made ones.

So it's worth giving it a go.

You're welcome!
I think posting this made his video get lots of looks. He made a new one that everyone that is contemplating making this should watch. He gives lots of great tips and also shows what happens if you knock it over.
