I'm watching a video that describes how the common view of the aftermath of the Destruction of the Jewish has been oversimplified and exaggerated. For at least the last two centuries various historical writers assume there is this fast shift from the priestly class to the rabbis, where things switch over nearly immediately or at least within a generation. But with new archelogy and study of the writings of the time we see that this notion is inaccurate and overstated. The vast bulk of the priestly class lived outside the temple where they acted as judges, teachers of the Torah, and Ritual Purity inspectors. Besides this there were various other groups like the Essenes that were very much temple orientated that they could join. Besides this, even Josephus writes that some priests continued on in society in his day, even though they gradually joined other groups like the Pharisees, Rabbis, Christians and other sects.

As far as my own commentary goes, this general topic is important when it comes to understanding things like Christian sacramentalism and Holiness. Folks that don't believe in sacramentalism tend to downplay the role of the temple especially, that it was a short-term Dispensational thing that did not have any real importance other than temporarily covering sin and maybe giving is a few Types and Shadows of Christ.
