So now we are naming tropical storms after musical modes?

Which one is next? Ionian? Mixolydian? Phrygian?
We have already passed Aolian.

So no Ionian or Mixolydian for you...

I might use Mixolydian or Ionian if I am trying to solo over a country tune. They are often in a major key. But, for some reason, I like Dorian and Aeolian. I like the minor sounds, dark sounds, sad sounds.

Hi dave,
No, I'm pretty sure the NHC is still using proper names for tropical storms.
UM - the NWS headquarters is right next door to where I am sitting right now, and I know some of the people involved with naming.

This was a joke sent out to lighten the mood around here. (aimed at those who know a bit of music theory)

Obviously, and it has nothing to do with famous people. Dorian is no exception.

If people want to complain about hurricane names, why didn't anyone protest the name Maria?

Since this hurricane likes to hang around without resolving, Hurricane Locrian would be more fitting.

I will make note of that to the staff next door (in the Weather Service)

How does the NHC decide what to name each tropical storm? There were many available D names to pick from unless some I know are retired.
NHC is part of the NOAA's National Weather Service. (NWS) The front office of NWS has a list that goes about 5 years out. It starts with the first being a name starting with A and alternates male and female names B, C, D, E, F, G, etc.

I believe you can find a link to the list on the NWS.NOAA.gov website.

ETA: Found the list:

I did talk to them. They laughed and said there were no plans for modulation at this point. :)

My bansuri flute, like all bansuri flutes, has the tonic right in the middle, so the lowest note is a G. I guess that makes it mixolydian.

So I am just getting into these modes and in Indian music something like them are called Raga. They are not only associates with moods but times of day and seasons.
