Joab's character is complex. He did a lot of good for David, but he also did some bad things. Solomon judged him in 1 Kings 2:
32 "The LORD will bring back his bloody deeds on his own head, because, without the knowledge of my father David, he attacked and killed with the sword two men more righteous and better than himself, Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah."
How will God judge Joab?
I don't know:
28 When the news came to Joab—for Joab had supported Adonijah although he had not supported Absalom—Joab fled to the tent of the LORD and caught hold of the horns of the altar.
In the end, he fled to the altar and died there.
34 Then Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up and struck him down and put him to death. And he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.
In contrast, 2 Kings 11:
1 When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to destroy the whole royal family.
King Ahaziah was the son of Athaliah. She took power by killing her grandsons.
Six years later, Jehoiada, the high priest, revealed Joash, the only surviving son of Ahaziah. Athaliah went to the temple and saw Joash being declared King of Judah. 2 Ch 23:
14b For the priest said, “Do not put her to death in the house of the LORD.” 15 So they laid hands on her, and she went into the entrance of the horse gate of the king’s house, and they put her to death there.
They did not kill Athaliah in the temple.
God will judge Athaliah harshly.
