Ge 16:

6 “Your slave is in your hands,” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.
Strong's Hebrew: 6031. עָנָה (anah) — 83 Occurrences

H6031 was a common word with many meanings. BDB:

  1. humble, mishandle, afflict: individual Genesis 16:6; Genesis 31:50 (J) Exodus 22:21; Exodus 22:22 (twice in verse) (E) Job 30:11; by imprisonment and bonds Judges 16:5,6,19;
  2. humble, a woman by cohabitation
  3. afflict as a discipline
H6031 appeared also in (ESV) Judges 16:

4 After this he loved a woman in the Valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. 5 And the lords of the Philistines came up to her and said to her, “Seduce him, and see where his great strength lies, and by what means we may overpower him, that we may bind him to humble him. And we will each give you 1,100 pieces of silver.” 6 So Delilah said to Samson, “Please tell me where your great strength lies, and how you might be bound, that one could subdue you.”
Samson finally told Delilah the secret of his strength:

18 When Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called the lords of the Philistines, saying, “Come up again, for he has told me all his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her and brought the money in their hands. 19 She made him sleep on her knees. And she called a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him.
That's before Samson woke up!

H6031 appeared three times in Jdg 16. ESV translated it differently every time.

Did Delilah torment Samson?

From the spiritual/vertical perspective, Samson's supernatural strength left him as his hair came off. The writer described the spiritual reality. However, 'torment' was an over-translation. Lexically, H6031 did not mean 'torment'. ESV interpreted the word.

New International Version:

After putting him to sleep on her lap, she called for someone to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him. And his strength left him.
20 Then she called, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”
He awoke from his sleep and thought, “I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.
21 Then the Philistines seized him, gouged out his eyes and took him down to Gaza.
At this point, the physical torment happened.

Did Delilah torment Samson?

Perhaps psychologically but not physically.
