IMHO, they were Jewish Christians in Jerusalem during the Jewish War of 66-73.
They are sealed
(1) as God’s own people
(2) because the Jews saved from destruction in Ezekiel 9.4 are sealed
(3) because the “mark of the beast” that people always talk about is a blasphemous parody, by the devil’s fake Messiah, of this Divine sealing
(4) and the seal may be the Cross, just as Ezekiel 9.4 refers to the (cross-shaped) letter Taw.
The number of 144,000 is clearly symbolic, like the other numbers in Rev. It seems to stand for a number that is both complete, and very large.
If this is correct, the “great crowd, that no man could number”, is to be understood of Gentiles.
