LEICESTER, United Kingdom – Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon says she is “utterly disgusted” by the behavior of soccer fans celebrating their league victory in Glasgow, including the fans’ “vile anti-Catholic prejudice.”

Rangers F.C. defeated Aberdeen 4-0 on Saturday to boast an undefeated season. They clinched the title in March, but lifted the trophy for the 55th time in their history after the Aberdeen match.

Rangers is the city’s Protestant club, while Celtic F.C. is supported by Catholics. Although the teams ply their trade in the largest city of Scotland, it is Northern Ireland which dominates the culture of the clubs.

Scottish flags – which can be found almost everywhere in the country – are not common in the teams’ stadiums: Celtic fans fly the Irish tri-color, while Rangers fans fly the Union Jack or even the Northern Irish flag.

This means supporters for the clubs often mix nationalism and sectarianism with sport, and this can involve violence.

As late as the 1980s, Rangers had an unofficial ban on Catholics playing for them.

It's all very silly. The overwhelming majority of those involved on both sides of Catholic-Protestant fighting like this are seldom practicing Christians and likely couldn't quote Genesis 1:1 with a gun to their head.

In some cases it's literally determined by which street you're born on and whether that falls under a Catholic or Protestant area; some of which neighbour each other.

Very, very childish.

Glasgow is a city of mixed blessings and curses. In contrast this week hundreds of people took to the streets in Glasgow to stop the immigration force, which is in Westminster control not Scottish control, from taking away two Muslim men who were established members of the community. One man lay under the van that was to take them away. After some hours they were released.
