Russia flaunts Western military hardware captured in war in Ukraine

I'm in Victory Park, Moscow's giant memorial complex dedicated to the Soviet Union's defeat of Nazi Germany. A new open-air exhibition has just opened.

But it has nothing to do with World War Two.

On display is Western military hardware captured by the Russian army in Ukraine.

They are war trophies and Russia has decided to flaunt them.

Among the armour here is a British Army Husky tactical support vehicle which had been donated to Ukraine. Its windscreen is covered in bullet-holes.

Opposite the Husky I can see Western tanks that had been transferred to the Ukrainian military. There's an American Abrams which had been damaged on the battlefield. A German Leopard tank, too.

In fact, there's a long line of German armour. And above it a sign: "History is repeating itself."

The Russians have not invented the wheel here. In the past Ukraine has displayed Russian military hardware that had been captured by the Ukrainian army.

But the real question is will Putin be honest and show the Russian people the actual number of dead soldiers. Oh you know their family members. Especially those who are conscripted to fight in this special military operations.

Is Russia still calling it special military operations now? I kinda lost track. But hey semantics let's just call it what it is - an invasion.

That is a distortion of the truth, but it does reflect the Russian President's paranoid attitude to the West. The history referred to is of course the German invasion of the Soviet Union. There is no invasion except Russia's invasion of Ukraine. There is no soviet Union (though it is revealing of Putin's fantasy of a new Russian Empire).

The last time German tanks were on Russian soil the Nazis were opposed by an alliance of British and American forces with the Soviet Union. Vital supplies contributing to the Soviet war effort came through Murmansk and Archangel (Arkhangelsk) on British vessels, mainly shipped from USA. The Allies helped an invaded sovereign state then - and the same thing is happening now.

Are they going to show off all of the captured washing machines . . .
. . . and children?

There could be giant screens with video footage of wrecked apartment blocks, corpses of executed civilians with their hands tied behind their backs, that tank from the early invasion which swerved to flatten a passing car. How about the stalled convoys out of fuel abandoned a few miles short of Kyiv?

Russian citizens should be shown Russian successes in all their magnificence.
