Nature often produces more offspring than will survive in a predator/prey environment. People in third world countries have large families as a needed work force and insurance against death of some of them. But even there the birthrate slows as the population becomes more urban, which doesn't help much as those countries resources continue to be spread pretty thin regardless.

In order to have reproducing great grandchildren one must start reproducing at a pretty young age. That's counter to everything we know about marriage, childbirth, education, and success. On the other hand everyone is someone's grandchild or great grandchild whether that antecedent is living or dead.

We have other needs that should come first.

You can check how many kids the great grandparent had even after that great grandparent is dead.

In a nation as rich as ours we do NOT have other needs that prevent us from educating all our kids. We perhaps have some inappropriate priorities.

We need to provide jobs for those we have already educated that can't find work in the field they went to school for because what 'we' taught them, and they paid good money to learn, is now 'out of fashion'. Many are returning to school to learn new skills even as the problems they were 'educated' to solve remain unsolved. Education always has to be "the next big thing", and is running far ahead of the work that we should be doing. Thanks largely to modern education we are 'running' toward an uncertain future, and right past needed work that doesn't require the level of education being sold to us. In short, we need 'undereducated' people to do the 'dirty work' that needs doing.

the day will come when all work like that will be done by machines, by robots. Indeed, the day will come (should our Lord tarry) when all work will be done by robots, period, including the work of police, judges, ceos of companies, truck drivers, housepainters, doctors, nurses . . . .

What will we do then for income for humans? Will the robots keep us around for pets?

I doubt, very much, that this will happen.

If being without the parent is a handicap, then the selection is for those who still have both parents.

If being without the parent is no big deal, then there won't be a selection affect in favor of two parent households.

In other words, if you think two parents make a difference, you cannot turn around and deny there is a selection affect.
There is a genetic selection in some species were the male and female pair for life. The prairie vole pair bond with their mate for life.

And that characteristic is paired with great care of offspring, relatively few offspring, very high percentage of surviving offspring.

Yet in heaven, we are said to be neither male nor female, and there is no marriage, except for us all being married to the lamb, our Lord Jesus Christ...

God Bless!

Well, if we are immortal, there's no need to raise a replacement generation.

While there is indeed a genetic basis for being more prone to addictions, this is not really true for intelligence if I remember correctly.

However, it is certainly true that there is a trend in our society that "more intelligent/educated" people have less kids as opposed to less intelligent/educated people.

I think it's not that genetics doesn't play a part in intelligence, but that others play a bigger part, all things equal some people will be smarter, but things like education, interactions during childhood, amount of food they get, and other things effect the brain and intelligence.

Well I had a decent education and decent upbringing with decent nutrition and yet I'm no Einstein . . .

other factors are things such as how much activity your brain got as a kid, how many new things you discovered or learnt, were still figuring out what goes into it all, and not saying it's not genetic, it's just that it's not only

Our evolution will go from natural to artificial.

Within the next 100 years we will have the ability to augment our bodies on a genetic level to realize any trait within our entire DNA strand including stuff that lies dormant.

A 100 years from now, getting wings and the ability to breath underwater (if you want) will be like getting breast implants now.

So evolution becomes a moot point once you can select the traits and characteristics you want as if you are ordering pizza from a menu...
