Sorry to hear about the pepper plants, but we here are having the same trouble. It seems to be a wilt or rust virus, but I can tell you if not treated, what will happen. The plant will continue to live but lose most of it's leaves and blossoms, stunted growth and produce about 1/10 of what you'd expect. So far it has hit the hot peppers hard, but the sweet and bell peppers I seem to have controled fairly well.
By the way, when you arrive South, be prepared to mulch, preferrably with leaves, around Tomatoes for here we have a soil borne fungus which kills tomatoes before they give a good crop. It gets onto the plant by rain splashing the surrounding soil onto the plant. Can be controled by mulching with leaves.
