Michael P. Cassidy of Lauderdale, Miss., has been charged with third-degree criminal mischief in violation of individual rights, a class D felony, for intentionally damaging a statue owned by the Satanic Temple of Iowa.

Mr. Cassidy dismantled the Baphomet Altar on Dec. 14 at the Iowa State Capitol and destroyed the headpiece, according to an Iowa State Patrol report.

Based on information from the victims, the cost to replace or repair the property is between $750 and $1,500. That amount would make the offense third-degree criminal mischief, an aggravated misdemeanor, according to Iowa Code Section 716.5.

He didn't do it the right way. What he should have done is to have dressed entirely in black tacticals with a face hood, go where the abomination was located about 11:30 PM on a moonless, dark night (preferably with a heavy fog), plant about 14 pounds of dynamite around it, with a silent timer switch that would cause the thing to blow at approximately 3 AM.

He should plead guilty, refuse to pay the fine, and take his prison sentence. He will be a free man in prison. The state of Iowa will have to pay for his room and board. It will cost them a bundle to put him up. And he can minister to those around him.

I should add that like the guy who dispatched the Buddha at the Omaha cathedral about 8 years ago he may get away with a tiny fine. That guy was fined a whopping $100. He lost his job as janitor at the site but he is regarded by many as a hero in the diocese.
