Can/should a Christian have meaningful friendships with non-Christians? What limits should there be with non-Christian friendships?

It is according to what you define as friendship. We should be kind and cordial to all people in order to let the light that is within us be seen by all.

However, you have to be very careful in establishing a close relationship with unbelievers. Do they respect your beliefs when they are with others, or do they try and get you to "join the crowd"? If they respect your beliefs, then there is probably hope that you can win them. If they try and change you into walking in their lifestyle, then they are probably not someone you want to associate with other than as a contemporary or polite conversation or business/work association.

Definitely, you would not want to have a confessional type relationship with unbelievers. By that I mean sharing personal problems and concerns with them. They can easily drag you down the wrong path.

Think of all the trouble King David and Solomon got into because of relationships with the wrong people.

How else can we understand another person, unless we are close to them 'as a friend'? Wasn't Jesus said to be the friend of sinners, even though He did not sin? We are all sinners, therefore we are not better than anyone we see on the street. We have messed up and fallen short, just as badly or maybe worse than them, only God knows. So let's wear off this idea of isolating ourselves from "dangerous" unbelievers.
How would God think of this? Proudful heart, who just wants to save itself?

I think we must put ourselves at risk, for the sake of Christ. It's true that if someone is truly blasphemous, maybe it is best not to hang with them, or if someone can't stand you. Then it is better to sprinkle the sand off our shoes and walk away, like Bible commands.
