President Biden‘s shift on energy and foreign policy has sparked outrage. Critics are accusing the administration of hypocrisy for promoting a green agenda domestically while lifting oil sanctions on an adversary and allowing Chevron to resume production in Venezuela.

What is your opinon? Are you against the President's efforts to find alternative oil sources to relieve energy prices?

That is a very general question.

Can you be more specific?

Okay, how is this?

Are you against the President's efforts to find alternative oil sources - in Venezuela - to relieve energy prices?

It's not that I have anything against Venezuelans; but I would prefer that he worked toward providing good jobs for Americans.

Chevron shareholders may be happy. Venezuela was criticized for seizing multinational oil investments as their leader has Marxist tendencies. I wish Biden would unblock construction of a pipeline from Canada that was approved by a previous administration. Some of the Canadian oil companies are pumping carbon dioxide into underground formations. The oil there is not as dirty as John Kerry described. If you go to Midland or Odessa, Texas, you will find there are job openings. Ever tried welding? Unemployment was near a 40 year low recently. Biden pointed out there are plenty of drilling locations available. He shut down some favorable locations raising the price of oil. The hurricanes seem worse with global warming, but I am dependent on gasoline. In China they started switching to electric cars, then burned coal to charge them. They formally abandoned the climate accords. I am dependent on Chinese manufactured goods. I have an iPhone made in China.

No I’m not against it at all. We have to do what works now, not concentrate on fantasies that are not feasible at this time.

Well, if Chevron were to bring Venezuela oil wells back into production, that should help relieve the current global oil supply and lower the price of energy / gas at the pump. That benefits American businesses (and workers) plus consumers.

And note this is a temporary agreement...

The Chevron deal is limited in scope. It is good for six months, and must be renewed after that. The agreement leaves space for the United States to revoke it if Mr. Maduro does not follow through on the humanitarian or other commitments — or to offer him future concessions if he does.

The Biden administration is also calling on Mr. Maduro to allow the United Nations to have unfettered access to Venezuela to write and publish assessments on the progress of the new humanitarian agreement.

The Chevron deal would allow the company to expand operations at a few projects it already runs with Venezuela’s state oil company, PDVSA, and to import Venezuelan oil to the United States. It specifically states that the oil company is prohibited from paying any taxes or royalties to the government of Venezuela. Instead, according to the Biden administration official, profits earned will go toward the repayment of government debt to Chevron.

Plus this should also help to alleviate inflation in general.

The government giving people jobs? Sounds like socialism to me.
True Socialism gives jobs in the same manner that slavery gives jobs. You do what you are told and are allowed to receive whatever those in charge decide they are willing to give you.

Socialism, Communism, Fascism, or Monarchism, when the government tells you where, or where not, you can do business?

Why support a dictator in Venezuela, who is getting rich off the oil, and not looking to our neighbors just feet away from the North and one of the largest oil reserves in the world? It's closer - more economical - it is safer - more ecologically safe and it is our ally, not a dictator with miserable issue on humanitarianism - whose people are forced to eat dogs to survive.

Does not make sense.

We already do...it's not enough to relieve the current supply shortage - globally:

Petroleum imports from Canada increased significantly since the 1990s, and Canada is now the largest single source of U.S. total petroleum and crude oil imports. In 2021, Canada was the source of 51% of U.S. gross total petroleum imports and 61% of gross crude oil imports.

  • The top five sources of U.S. total petroleum (including crude oil) imports by percentage share of total petroleum imports in 2021 were:
  • Canada 51%
  • Mexico 8%
  • Russia 8%
  • Saudi Arabia 5%
  • Colombia 2%

Additionally, as I noted earlier, the Chevron agreement is temporary, conditioned on the Venezuelan government meeting upholding their commitments....

Yeah, even worse is Germany reviving coal burning electric power plants -- which emit far more CO2 than other things like natural gas -- while also wanting to close down their last 3 nuclear power plants (though they've been having 2nd thoughts....). Imagine doing that kind of shoot-yourself-in-the-foot. Be glad Biden isn't like the German parties that want to shut down all nuclear plants.

It's good Biden ended the ineffective sanctions on Nord2 that did not work, where the Russians just ignored the sanctions finally and continued building. Ending the useless sanctions was a good step, and notice what happened finally: Germany took full responsibility finally and closed Nord 2 down itself. The whole time, only Germany could really stop Nord2, because it was a pipeline from Russia to Germany. It was not a U.S. territory.

Psst.... the sanctions were in place to punish them for not "upholding their comitments....". Now we are giving the dictator millions for what? What incentive does he have to do anything?

Also - why not INCREASE the oil from Canada through some type of conveyance - hmmm... like the keystone pipeline - to INCREASE what we are taking in. More oil as a lower cost for the US - more income for and ally - more Jobs created to maintain and work the pipeline -

vs

More millions for a dictator
Oil at a greater cost (shipping)
A greater threat to the ecology
and money flowing into a country that is NOT an ally.

Hmm... which would be better for the US?

I believe Germany reversed its decision to shutter those last 3 (perfectly functional) nuclear plants this summer.

(Methane may not be quite as "greenhouse clean" as thought when the methane leaks are taken into account.)

Well, Putin put an end to that for good.

I kept hearing over and over that the president has absolutely no control over oil/gas prices.

Then you should listen more closely.

When someone says "President X made oil/gas prices go up/down." the appropriate response is "Presidents don't have that much power to affect oil/gas prices." because they don't.

That is not to say there is nothing that a President can do that can directly affect oil prices. Applying or removing a sanction on a major oil producer is one thing that can affect oil prices. The president that has had the largest impact on global oil prices this year is V. V. Putin.

Does and doesn't depending on how the spin needs to go.
