Norton Antivirus works good, but there is alot of backdoors and trojans that norton antivius doesn't pick up cause the code of the backdoor and trojan has been changed.  There is one called sdbot that is a really bad backdoor for windows.  Just download from places that you know you can trust, and don't open email attachments.

Good, up-to-date ones do. McAfee works well for me... Ad-aware is also helpful.

And yes, they do work. I've caught backdoor/trojans in my computer using virus scan.
