After the 2020 presidential election, as some Trump supporters falsely claimed that President Biden had stolen the office, many of them displayed a startling symbol outside their homes, on their cars and in online posts: an upside-down American flag.

One of the homes flying an inverted flag during that time was the residence of Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., in Alexandria, Va., according to photographs and interviews with neighbors.

The upside-down flag was aloft on Jan. 17, 2021, the images showed.

The justice blamed his wife and her beef with a neighbor:

”I had no involvement whatsoever in the flying of the flag,” Justice Alito said in an emailed statement to The Times. “It was briefly placed by Mrs. Alito in response to a neighbor’s use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs.”

So now that means both Justices Thomas (husband of insurrection supporter Ginni) and Alito are irreparably compromised in every single case involving the attempts to overturn the election and the events of 1/6.
They must recuse themselves--although retirement would be preferable.
The arrogance and shamelessness disgust me.

As I understand from the story, Mrs. Alito took issue with one of her neighbor's anti-Trump signs that included an expletitive. Other neighbors, who were not involved in the conflict and asked not to be named, took photos of the flag, stating it was flown for "several days." I presume Mr Alito has some say over what is or is not displayed outside his home. Even more so when he is a sitting USSC Justice. His response is pathetic. He knows very well a justice, at any level, should never appear to have a conflict of interest. This is a clear ethics violation....

I’m trying to imagine how embarrassing it must be to have gone to an ivy league law school, and risen to one of the most prestigious legal positions in the world, only to have your wife pushing crackpot conspiracy theories in public. I’d be mortified and I’m a nobody.

That assumes these people can feel shame. They clearly don’t.

Oh, Thomas clearly feels shame about being lumped in with "diversity hires." That's why he fights so hard against affirmative action.

I saw enough on election day/night - and a whole lot afterwards - to leave me doubting the results of that election.

Too many shenanigans and they only occurred in background counties.

An upside down flag is an international symbol of distress - it's a cry for help, literally.

If you saw anything surrounding the 2020 election you would understand why a symbol of distress.

It doesn't matter what measure you use, right or left we are a nation in distress and in desperate need of help. Lives and property are at stake.

I agree it is pretty distressing when a justice of the Supreme Court joins a criminal defendant in open rebellion against their government. That is a very precarious situation to be in as a country.

You witnessed them personally?

I doubt it.

No, what you “saw” was what was fed to you by a bunch of propagandists who were trying to profit off of lies. Trump et al were trying to steal the election and Fox et al were keeping their viewers outraged.

What did an affluent woman in a nice DC suburb have to cry for help about in that manner?

If you saw anything surrounding the 2020 election you would understand why a symbol of distress.
The only distressing thing I saw was Trump’s attempt to steal it and the throngs of people willing to go along with his con.

Well, I thought - just my thinking here - that since this being a symbol of distress it could also then stand in as a national symbol of distress also, not only personal, since it is our national flag.

And many saw the nation being in distress then, even those or perhaps especially those who disagreed with the riot over on Capital Hill.

As far as why a white woman in an affluent neighborhood I would say the above. Probably not the neighbors... Just my thinking.

I will say that it's likely true that the flag is something she did independently and when hubby found out he made her fix it because of his position.

I've done things without asking that my husband has disagreed with before - it happens.

Granted I've never put up an upside down flag, but this was the underlying principles of it that I see most flyers as seeming to believe.

ah, so, to display her concern over the riot, she chose to display the symbol adopted by the people who supported the riot. Interesting theory. Probably the same reason why the north flew the stars and bars and the rebels flew the union jack.

It was supposedly up for several days and the pics show it being next to the driveway. I’m as oblivious to that sort of thing as anybody, but I’d like to think I would have noticed it. Maybe he was on vacation or never left the house.

I don't consider his wife's action to reflect on Alito himself, nor do I consider the action to be a clear indication of "stop the steal" support. I wouldn't expect Alito to recuse himself from anything just because the flag at his house was upside-down for a while.

As I wrote earlier:

...he, and Justice Thomas should recuse themselves from all January 6th cases. They continued participation taints any argument they make in the court and ultimately, any decision.

I don't know what's worse, an insurrectionist judge hiding behind his wife's skirts...

Or an insurrectionist former president hiding behind a Supreme Court judge's robes.

Neither the judge nor the former president should qualify for immunity from accountability.

Nope. Too vague, as far as I'm concerned.

Compromised court
Compromised tort.

Swooosh
My daughter raised millions bashing Trump but I can still be an impartial judge.
So a wife sending a distress signal shouldn’t be a problem
