It's been a good while since
I thought of the sea as a friend.
I've come to the waters to reconcile
God's call to peace with all of life's frictions.
But the Lord has a way
of busting up crutch paradigms.
He says lean not wholly on reasons,
but, yes, we can on words from the Christ.
Here is the wind, waves, the rocking
of boats rubbing up against docks.
I see the scrapes of their finish
which speak to the day-by-day launch.
Where would the haul be if these didn't
brave the scorch and the rough?
Sure, our efforts grapple,
but it's vision and courage that triumphs.
Some might say "triumph" just might be
too strong of a word,
but when worldviews clash, yielding to grace
keeps us serving over the surf.
