Thoughts On My Writing Style

I pretty much have my own style of writing, which has changed over the years.

When I first started writing for fun as a child, my writing style was basically simple. There were descriptions here and there, but a lot of things weren't detailed. Words and phrases may have been overused. At the time, I didn't even know that a new paragraph should begin whenever a different character speaks - in fact, I started out using no paragraphs at all! And sometimes, things in my stories didn't make much sense...now I often find myself laughing at them whenever I read them again.

When I was a teen and began to get advice on my writing, I tried my best to improve. However, I found that trying too hard to be descriptive, trying to write perfectly, took all the fun out of writing for me. I'm often too eager to get to the action to pause and add long descriptions.

So what do I do now? I use sort of an "in between" style of writing. I try to add some details and not repeat things too much, but I don't try overly hard to be descriptive. I describe things whenever I feel it's necessary, of course, but I don't fill half the story with descriptions. After all, I write for fun, not to be a perfect writer. Not everyone will love my work and that's okay, because you can't please everyone.
