KJV Dictionary Definition: faith
4. Evangelical, justifying, or saving faith, is the assent of the mind to the truth of divine revelation, on the authority of God's testimony, accompanied with a cordial assent of the will or approbation of the heart; an entire confidence or trust in God's character and declarations, and in the character and doctrines of Christ, with an unreserved surrender of the will to his guidance, and dependence on his merits for salvation. In other words, that firm belief of God's testimony, and of the truth of the gospel, which influences the will, and leads to an entire reliance on Christ for salvation.
(MY comment on KJV definition. Saving faith begins with accepting the divine (Holy Spirt inspired Jn 12:32) revelation of a risen Christ. Placing one's entire confidence/trust in God's character/attributes/work. Surrendering one's self/will to God's Holy Spirit's direction. Placing your eternal life/salvation promise solely in/on the merits (sin atoning work) of the Lord Jesus.)
Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words: Faith
(1) a firm conviction, producing a full acknowledgement of God's revelation or truth, e.g., 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12;
(2) a personal surrender to Him, John 1:12;
(3) a conduct inspired by such surrender, 2 Corinthians 5:7.
Prominence is given to one or other of these elements according to the context. All this stands in contrast to belief in its purely natural exercise, which consists of an opinion held in good "faith" without necessary reference to its proof. The object of Abraham's "faith" was not God's promise (that was the occasion of its exercise); his "faith" rested on God Himself, Romans 4:17, Romans 4:20-Romans 4:21. (MY comment on Vine's definition. Confidently accepting the truth (Jn14:6) found only in Jesus. Here again, surrendering one's self/will/conduct to God's Holy Spirit's direction. Trusting in Christ, HIS merits/work & abilities. Sadly, the narrative of today's Christendom majority's, places salvations focus on the believer (their works/confessions etc). The KJV & Vine's dictionary translators, BOTH, base salvation's deliverance from sin & death. Entirely in/on faith/reliance placed on Christ's merits (sin atoning work)!

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
