Because of our Congregationalist polity, Baptist churches can and do vary on how exactly they function. Some are led by an individual pastor, others by a group of elders, and some are even deacon-led.

I have been hearing a lot about elder-led congregationalism, especially in some more Reformed-leaning churches, but they also exist in the Churches of Christ movement.

It's argued that the early churches in the Bible had elders, as well, and was the norm.

So, how did we, as Baptists end up with a system with a single pastor as the typical model for the church?
