It may be that there have been so many other space shows since then that for me it didn't seem as original as perhaps it would have at the time.

Perhaps. I found it cowboy type space idea original myself. Yet I read more fantasy and watch far fewer movies.

Me, too. My favorite episode is A Man Called Jayne. :D
I don't know that it's the best episode - but it's certainly the funniest. Ha ha - such great character writing.

I loved Firefly - which I call "Buffy in space".

But then didn't a bunch of the crew end up working on BattleStar? Battlestar is as dark and moody as Firefly was light - drawing heavily on post-9/11 angst and PTSD themes. It was mostly great, some episodes struggled - but the overall Metanarrative and story arc and conclusion had me jumping out of my chair and shouting "No way!" The end of season 3 was one of the most exciting cliffhangers to ever have to wait for the next season - I've NEVER had a cliffhanger that bad.
