Zondervan publishes a Catholic Bible!?!?!?!

I was in a Protestant book store about an hour ago, and found a Catholic Bible published by the Zondervan, a very famous Protestant company. They are the ones who publish the NIV Student Bible (my favorite Bible as a Baptist!!)

Since becoming Catholic, I have thought more then a few times how cool it would be for them to publish a complete Bible (with all 77
books )

This version is called, "Good News Translation of Holy Bible, with the Deutercanonical."

That caught my eyes, I was like , "Hey they are calling it Deutercanonical, not the Apocrypha. How cool is that!"

Then on the back it says, "updated notes for Catholic Readers."

I was impressed again, and then I saw:

"With the Nihil Obstat, and Imprimatur."


I didn't get it, anyone else see it?

I haven't seen that one. But I do have a Catholic Women's Study Bible by Zondervan. It is very good.

Zondervan publishers were bought out by HarperCollins a few years ago, which is now part of the K. Rupert Murdoch media empire which includes Fox TV network. Religious publishing is in the same boat as all publishers, the big boys are taking over to the harm of all readers.

The Good New Translation, or Today's English Version is not so much a literal interpretation as it is a rendering of the ideas of the original text into modern English. Unfortunatly the Protestant translators have a very different idea of what the ideas of the original text are than we do, so many of the passages, especially those about Sacraments, will look very different than the Bible we're used to. It is a very simple translation, and is usually used for children, but the simplicity takes away a lot from accuracy. The addition of the deuterocanonicals does not change any of the Protestant alteration to the New Testament, and the presence of an impermature only means that one bishop looked at it and felt that there was no heresy in it, it does not mean that it is an accurate or suitable translation of the Bible. In fact, they could could make gross errors in translation (as they did in my oppinion), and since errors in translation are not what are considered for an impermature, it could still get it.

I saw an NAB at one of their stores, but it was lacking in study tools and cost twice as much as a ST. Joeseph's NAB study bible.

I don't really like the GNB, and I am surprised it got ecclesial approval!
