Just a question out of random curiouity. I went to church for the first time in...erm, a while, for a Christmas with my family. One of the songs sung was Deck the Halls - a very pagan song ^_^

Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
'Tis the season to be jolly
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Don we now our gay apparel
Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la.
Troll the ancient Yule-tide carol
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.

See the blazing Yule before us.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Strike the harp and join the chorus.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Follow me in merry measure.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
While I tell of Yule-tide treasure.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Fast away the old year passes.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Hail the new year, lads and lasses
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Sing we joyous, all together.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
heedless of the wind and weather.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

 I cannot say why they would sing that in a church.....but when they're not in church, what is wrong with it? You see, with me it isn't difficult to separate the two. Definitely Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ - or we wouldn't even have Christmas Day!!! My view of the other part, Santa Claus being a major part of it.....does nothing to harm my belief and trust in Christ as my Saviour and my God! Some of my most treasured memories are of when I was a child and Daddy would come wake me up on Christmas morning....he always whispered, "Santa Claus has been here!" Even when I was older and 'knew' that he was Santa.....that "magic" remained! I don't look at any of the Santa side of Christmas as being something to tear down the reason for the season. Frankly, I have a hard time understanding why so many people have trouble with that.

As for Deck the Halls being sung in church.....that isn't right, and I won't even try to pretend it is. There are plenty of 'carols' that belong in church...so what happened in that service today is uncalled for, and someone should be called on the carpet over it. Hope you had a very Merry Christmas, my friend!

Good question! You must have visited the same church I did! Okay, we're on different continents, maybe not. Thanks for posting the lyrics.

The words I sing in church are very important to me, and as I sing I try to pray along with them, or learn something that applies to my life. It really bothers me when churches pick songs that have no spiritual meaning (or pagan, lol). I don't usually complain, though.

I was on a worship team where we were reminded often that our focus was not music, but to lead others in worship. We were to treat the congregation as if they were the worship team.

We can get really superspiritual and arrogant talking like this, but my daughter almost walked out on church this Christmas Eve, because a group of puppets sang Christmas carols intentionally off key and carelessly. It was supposed to make the kids enjoy the service, but it left the congregation feeling empty and let down.

The words should reflect our beliefs! And build our inner faith.

man looks on outward appearance, but God looks on the heart. - 1samuel16:7

who created those things to use for decorating? did a pagan? no. God did. all things were made by Him and for Him. john1:3
if the heart is not pagan when decorating the house for the holiday. and all that one does is celebrating the birth of Christ the Savior.. then any created thing - those decorations - will rejoice also because they too are redeemed from being used to observe something pagan.

"Deck the Halls" might have been sung in church simply to represent the holiday season. While the religious outlook of Christmas is upon Jesus' birth, the more "american-ish" outlook upon Christmas deals with simply the legend of Santa Claus, consumerism, and trying to make the world a little better...even if only for a little while. Since "America" and "Christianity" go together in many "traditional" outlooks in the world today, your church may have simply combined them for this holiday season.

"Trying to make the world a little better"--that's very true. People also bask in the whole atmosphere of pine needles and candles and street lights and memories, so "Because its British" even applies.

I was at a church where an interim pastor suggested that the lights come on for the candle lighting, since the congregation needed to read while they sang. Boos rose out of this restrained congregation, and the lights stayed dimmed. We Americans have got to have our atmosphere, our decked halls.
