Why was John's gospel so different from the synoptic?
I believe John wrote his gospel after the synoptic gospels were written. He intentionally avoided repeating much of the synoptic material.

Jn 20:
John chose his stories for his particular purposes.30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Jn 21:
24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. 25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
