Why do girls use a winky face in texts and social media?

I have no idea. It could just be a friendly gesture, a flirty one, or a playful one. I would say it depends on the context of the message with it. Why do guys use them? I have a guy friend who sends me winky faces from time to time. I generally just think of it as a friendly gesture. In other word, I don't read anything into it.

I don't know. To me a wink means phiet phiew and for a girl to do that is weird. We did that for fun as kids. Hey psssst wink click aaaaaah.
We have a dating site where you can show your interest by sending a wink but not a normal small wink, no a huge one that fills the page. One man put in his profile: please women don't wink at me, I hate that.
So I just had to. Hahahahaha childish behavior.

I second this. I think it's just a friendly or playful gesture. Sometimes I add them just simply because it's hard to express yourself in text, and adding one makes a message seem friendlier. I wouldn't read into it beyond that.

Wait is this something only girls do? I'm a guy and I use it fairly often. Basicly to show that I'm joking. Sarcasm is hard in text form and it helps.

EX: "Ya I'm sure your going to fail that test" vs "ya I'm sure your going to fail that test ;) "

Thought typically I use :p more than ;)

I'm flirting ;).
Or joking ;).
Or throwing it in as a sort of "let's chill out and stop taking everything so seriously, please" ;).
Or as a response to something that I'm not entirely sure how to respond to, but I'm fairly sure it's either a joke/flirting attempt ;).
Sometimes I just use it as a sort of "you know what I mean" type thing ;).

I don't know. A lot of girls love their emoticons. Myself included. Sometimes I think I throw them in just because we're having a textual conversation and I feel like my face is being too expressive for words alone. My face wants in on the conversation, and that leads to emoticons all over the place.

My question is what does ;) mean and why do girls use it?
It means there is something more to, or behind a statement than face value. That could be a flirt, or joke or some other semi hidden meaning.
So there is really no set answer to your question, and girls use it for the same reason boys do.

I don't know you mean that has nothing to do with the conversation.
She probably has something in her eye and that's why she winks. I don't know lol. That's my way of saying you're probably overthinking it.

Why would my brother's girlfriend use it when she talks to me over Facebook? I kinda of wondering about that.
It depends on the context. Did she say a joke before typing it? A wink on it's own doesn't really mean anything.
It's also quite easy to accidentally type ;) instead of :)
You can always ask her what the wink meant.

Also i agree with Saucy, i think you are overthinking it.
