I've always liked the NRSV, but a find that a lot of teens like the NIV. I have copies of both types. The one you are looking at looks good.

The NIV I've got is a Teen Study Bible - it's got a blue cover . . . kind looks like bubbles. It's got some cool stuff in it, too.

The NRSV one I've got is by Zondervan. I've always been pleased with Zondervan publications.

I had the life Application Bible in High school and me and my friends really enjoied it. I don't know about the New Living Translation though - I know it's really readable, I don't know how accurate it is though. Mine was NIV and it was nice. Hope it all turns out well!

Heya,
The best version to get for a young person is the 'youth bible', it is such a great translation for young people and it has great advice and summaries in it.
It could just be an English thing though, not sure about the US?

http://www.wesleyowen.com/Merchandiser/catalog/Product.jhtml?PRODID=95045&CATID=179222

If not then the message is another great and simple version,

i'd advise that you buy eiher of those kind rather than an NIV. I'm sure they'd be much more likely to read them.

Usually a figutative translation is easier to read like the message or the CEV or my favourite the New Living Translation but I have some young guys who like the King James! I suppose it's apersonal thing - you could do some teaching on it and explain the different versions and have some to compare, so that people could make a choice. Personally I usually choose the translation that supports my theology!! (joking)

Ok, I decided on the Zondervan NIV Student Bible because I liked the idea of the teen Life Application study helps. It was hard deciding whether to go for that or the Study Bible version, though. I changed my mind from the New Living Translation because although it is extremely easy to read,it just doesn't seem to have the reputation and following of the NIV.

New Living Translation=My friend as a baby Christian :D

I had read the NIV version all my life but some of it didn't make sense when I was younger. So, I got myself an NLT one to read alongside my NIV--It worked wonders! I now have a deeper understanding of the Word. And yes--I accepted Christ at 16, So I think you picked the right one :)

Sounds like you made a good choice.

NASB is more of a literal word for word translation, and NLT is more of a thought for thought translation... NIV is somewhere in the middle of that. :)

I personally prefer NASB, but it can be hard to understand sometimes. I have an NIV as well.

This might help

Literal translation Mixture Figurative translation
(Closer to word for word) (closer to interpretting meaning)
KJV, NKJV, ASv-------------------NIV--------------Message, C.E.V, NLT

e.g.
Literal
(KJV) If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

Figurative
(CEV) You cannot be my disciple, unless you love me more than you love your father and mother, your wife and children, and your brothers and sisters. You cannot come with me unless you love me more than you love your own life.

being a youth...i can tell u my opinion. most youth, in fact...almost all of my friends and i, use the NIV Bible. We find it eaiser to read without all of the THEEs and THOUS and BEGAT and all that stuff....it makes it eaiser to read...getting youth to study on a regular basis is hard enough...its helpful if they can study something they can actually read. basically..my opinion...if you are just getting someone a bible for a birthday or just a random reason or whatever...go with NIV unless they ask otherwise....

If you are looking for more accuracy, go for the NRSV or NKJV, if you vant a good read, but not necessarily as accurate as it could be, go for NLT or NCV, if you want something in between, I would suggest NIV. I have the Life Application Study Bible NIV version and I love it. If she already has a good bible you might consider something like The Message, which is a great read and very useful as a study aid if you read it parallel to andother translation. (I think you can also get a Message/NIV together in the one book type thing as well!)

Hope this helps!
